Fishing:Trout (River)

Fished for 6 hours until rain stopped play. Water temp still low and a gusty upstream wind. One lovely OOS, 16 inch fin perfect Grayling on a black beaded nymph. Don't know where the trout are! No rises seen and just a few olives appearing for a short time. The largest Cormorant I've ever seen "canoeing" down the rapids in the middle of the beat !

Its a lovely looking stream but no fish caught, raised or seen. I was disappointed that my second day's fishing resulted in another blank. I fished small nymphs since no fly life seen.
Your beat description starts you fishing at the Dol Llyn Wydd farm bridge and yet your directions take you to the half way point (the turning to Erwood). Perhaps it would be better to for directions to take you on to the next turning and down past Dol Llyn Wydd farm (there is space for one car just before the bridge on the right).

Patiently waited for midday activity but the cold wind blowing down from the snow-covered Beacons never relented and what hatch there was only lasted for at best half an hour. One brownie caught on Hare's Ear Nymph fished deep but very little activity otherwise. Nevertheless, a lovely beat and will be aim to be back when spring finally arrives!

Back again! Water up 4"+ on last week but strangely less coloured? Hooked and lost 20-24" fish within the first ten minutes, it threw the flying C on the fourth aerial somersault. The following two hours resulted in two pike landed and several others avoided only by whipping the lure out before they could get a hold. They were such a problem I switched to the fly rod. Only the one WBT of 1.5lb(ish) to report. Many fish seen, lots jumping and seemed to be moving through at quite a pace. It's worth wading into the Carey Stream just to watch them go by!

A warmer day, I believe double digits were reached. Overcast with intermittent drizzle. River looked good, reasonable visibility. Started to notice fish rising around 1230 a little way up the beat where the trees offered some shelter. A nice hatch of olives lasted from then until perhaps 1530, with it being at its heaviest around 1400. Little groups of trout were taking adults on the surface in each of the sections where fast, shallow water transitioned to deeper, slower water. Standing on the high bank, they seemed to be emerging from the depths rather than holding in the upper part of the water column.
Two beautiful brown trout caught, one on a CDC Olive dun, the other on a CDC BWO emerger, 14" and 8" respectively. First fish kept, second returned.
No interest on nymphs fished at all depths throughout the day.

Hooked one on very first cast (in neck of Smoke House Pool), at rod tip, which fell off almost immediately and that, sadly, was that.
