Water coloured and we fished at lunchtime, so conditions probably too hot. Beautiful beat though and some extremely fishy pools

A couple of fish seen infrequently rising in 2 of the few spots that were accessible but no rises to the fly - one pull on a nymph was all we could manage between us.
As previous reports suggest the top half of the beat is largely unfishable due to overhanging trees along most of the beat, steep banks and barbed wire fences making access in/out the river difficult when necessary due to several blockages across the whole stream. A nice looking beat but with such limited access somewhat frustrating.

Tough day on a high and coloured river -1.38m on the env agency website. Fished near the parking in the middle of the stretch and the bottom of the stretch. Anywhere with slightly deeper water on your bank was worth a look for chub. We caught 6 really good ones on meat - most were over 5lb with the biggest nearer to 6.
Highlight of the day for me was observing an otter at close quarters - about 15feet.
Lovely beat but top swims in the woods were not identifiable in the high water so we did not try them.

A lesson today in reading the insect life. Fished 6 hours on Lower Crai and although I rose a couple it was hard going and I was zero fish after 4.5 hours. I thought it was the weather, pressure, temperature, clumsiness, etc. I had tried variants of Para Adams in size and colour but without success. There were fish rising but I couldn't tempt them. There was a steady hatch and in what I can only claim was in desperation, I decided to try something different and switched to a Blue Dun. Instant success with two fish caught in quick succession and a further 7 to follow (all returned). I don't normally pay attention to what is on the end. I have a favourite and usually very successful Parachute Adams "habit". I particularly like them because I can see them! Perhaps todays lesson was one of breaking habits.
PS: A word about my ninth fish. Coming off the top of the beat I had caught 8, but 6 hours previous, a large fish at the beat start had frustrated me. One final cast with the Blue Dun on the tail of the pool and I had my fish of the day in a plump 12" Crai trout which bent my rod double. Fantastic!

This was a frustrating and ultimately disappointing day. There's no doubt this is a lovely beat and it has fished very well for one of us in the past. But we arrived to see that recent rain had lifted the river marginally but brought a pretty dirty wash down with it. We also both noticed how difficult it was to get a decent footing as there seemed to be a layer of very slippery silt everywhere - it needs a bigger flush through to clear some of this. Very few fish showing all day: those few that did rise only seemed to show once before disappearing for the rest of the day. Only managed five small trout between us. Still, it's much better to be on the river than not!
