Beat:On trout fishing at Pantyscallog (Upper Usk)

The river was in perfect condition today with gin-clear water and the Southerly wind barely reaching the surface of this very pretty and largely hidden stretch of the Usk, which I have never fished before, but which turned out to be ideal for the dry-fly. I was quite optimistic when I observed some fairly regular hatches throughout the day. However, despite witnessing one reasonable brown trout launching itself out of the water in a vain attempt to catch a butterfly, I was amazed at how few fish I saw today. I can only assume that they were hiding in some of the deeper pools! No salmon about either today.

Beat:On fishing Maes Y Beran R32 Voucher beat

Water high with a tinge of colour. The Honddu was ,once again the only river in the area fishable after the monsoon.

Plenty of trout willing to rise to a #14 klinkhammer presented in the pools and pockets. As usual striking on the r of rise was too slow! 7 to hand, the best being 12" and a much better fish lost toward the the top of the beat which was good sport for the conditions.

The Honddu and the other upper beats on the Monnow, including the Dore should be good for this week.

Beat:On Salmon Fishing at Ty Newydd

Very good service from the Foundation but the river was still a bit too high especially for a novice such as myself

Beat:On fishing the Upper Wye

Thank you so much for all your help in organising fishing for myself and my son last week. We had a great time despite ferocious amounts of water in the river and falling on us. You run a very flexible system and it was great to be able to upgrade my rod to Salmon on the days when the water was high. Great river. We fished Ty Newydd, Gromain and Sheephouse.

Beat:On fihing Roving Voucher beat R38 Longtown

Sun & clouds, nothing rising, very little hatching, and water high and slightly coloured from the rain. Pretty river but challenging due to tree cover.

Winkled out 1 beautiful brownie (approx. 10") from under a tree canopy on a small black Adams. Released.

Beat:On coarse fishing at Middle Hill Court (Wye)

A very wet day, but fantastic surroundings. 4 barbel, 3 chub, 1 eel and a perch were caught. Some annoying canoeists (stag weekends) hitting our lines, but apart from that a wonderful day. Will be booking again soon. Thankyou.

Beat:Coarse fishing on the Wye

27 July 2009. Holme Lacey. River about 3' up but suited the barbel. I ended with 9 fish to 7-4 and my fishing buddy, Andy mills, had 4 barbel up to 8-6. We both had a number of chub but relatively few probably due to the high water.

28 July 2009. Preston Court. Nice water but access to swims a touch difficult; needed a dog spike and rope for some. Fishing was slow as the river was higher. I ended with 1 barbel of 7-14 and my buddy Andy did well and had 6 plus a couple of chub. I had 1 4lb chub too.

30 July 2009. Sheephouse. Fished the middle beat with water about 6' higher. Access very difficult and struggled all day to get to swims so ended staying put most of the time, fishing the inside of a bend. Buddy Andy had 3 chub and I had one, but no barbel.

31 July 2009. Lower Carrots. 6' of floodwater had run off from the previous day making the water eminently fishable. I had 12 barbel up to 7-10 and my fishing mate Andy had 9 barbel up to 8-7.

Greatly enjoyed the fishing on the Wye beats with only Sheephouse a disappointment due to such limited access.

The barbel preferred pellet and we tended to pick up chub on meat.

Stayed at Canon Bridge, lovely place and had some barbel from their stretch too. Back in a couple of weeks.
