Caught 8 barbel & 5 chubb on pellet, meat & bread. Parking area's clearly marked, top section looked best but had the longest walk, bottom section only got a few swims. The land owner who is a top chap gave me some good advice. The bottom swim is very snaggy top section deeper & clearer. Middle section near islands you can stalk barbel in clear conditions.

Another cracking day on the Wye with river and weather both in fine form. First time on this beat so I fished all bar 2 of the 11/12 swims along this beat whilst my fishing partner stayed put in one. Caught barbel out of 5 different swims on 4 different baits and strangely only had one chub, although its was a good fish at 4lbs 12oz.
Ended up with 11 barbel between us up to 9-10lbs. My mate also had fun with the dace (and bleak!).

River was quite high and somewhat brown due to the heavy rain a few days before but nevertheless clear enough for a large fly.
Had one gentle tug during the day but otherwise no other indications of salmon about although apparently there have been quite a few taken by spinning both below and above the estate water recently. I wonder how many are being returned?
One 2lb trout caught and returned on a large shrimp pattern!

The river was high, coloured and running quickly with quite a lot of debris coming downstream. Despite the conditions it was a lovely spot to fish and I caught 1 Barbel in the morning of about 6lb. My trusty fishing partner, J livened the day with a brief comedy turn, galloping down the bank chasing his kettle and falling in the river. His timing was perfect as a rowdy stag party of canoeists enjoyed the whole spectacle and offered a range of colourful observations as he clawed his way back up the bank.

1 x cock salmon, 33 inches, on size 8 Bann Shrimp fished off a fast sink tip. A coloured fish, but hog-backed and deep-bodied, very strong, which in the heavy water had me trotting down the bank at a fair old lick in order to get below him and come to conclusions.
Stephen might be interested to hear that, inspired by the advice in his latest news letter, I had the old Bruce and Walker standing by in reserve and made up ready for dredging: a full sinking line, 5 foot leader and a beast of a Red Francis specially tied on a heavy brass tube for the occasion. This was how the Victorians fished, wasn't it? As the sink tip worked this morning, the deep sinker wasn't used, but I promise to try it soon.

Fished the middle beat. Strong downstream wind for most of the day; river clear and dropping but the level a tad high, averaging about 0.65m. Little fly and hardly a rise all day. Had five grayling; four of 12-13" and one of 15", plus two small trout. Fished duo and Czech nymphed - three fish taken off the top and the others on nymphs. Tough!

Had a lovely day on this stretch of the river. Started at the top albeit a little late. After missing quite a few bites due to not having a great deal of experience on rivers and the last time I was on any river was well over a year ago, I opted for touch ledgering which resulted in two nice Chub around the 3 pound mark. A long spell of not catching anything (and a little nap as the weather was very nice) I forced myself to move which I should have done hours before. This resulted in much more action and soon I found myself with a beauty of a Barbel of around 7 Pound. Spurred on by this I tried to find more Barbel but in vain. Moving down stream did the trick again tho and soon I reeled in 3 more decent Chub with the biggest being just under 6 plb. For me are record so chuffed to bits. All fish were caught on meat. Had to go home before dark for other obligations and although I'm sure many out there would say that would be meager result, for me a joy of a day.
Thanks WUF I will most certainly be back on this stretch. On to Wye Bank tomorrow for some more action I hope.
