Wonderful day on the Wye. A lovely barbel first cast of 8-10lbs. Two other smaller barbel 4-6lb came later in the day. A great day on a great river. A big barbel really is every bit as impressive a beast as an Osprey! In my humble opinion at least! Thank you WUF and the Environment Agency for all your river restoration and river protection work.

My friend and I fished Talybont for the third time in 2 years and always enjoy its beauty and chance to catch brown trout. It was a wet and windy day so fishing was tough. I caught 2 nice trout and had 3 or 4 takes on a pheasant tail nymph with a hares ear thorax and a dawl back. I started on wet flies but no luck. There was a hatch of olives but little to nothing rising thus the change to the nymphs. My friend caught one small trout on a hopper. Lovely place to fish and will be back hopefully in nicer weather conditions.

Day got off to hilarious start when herd of cows chased the car down the farm track then to my relief they veered right towards some feeding troughs. Parked up and went into boot to get gear sorted out, 15 seconds later removed head from boot only to find myself and car completely surrounded by 40 of the soon to be roast dinners. 1\2 dozen wanted to use car as scratching post, one had her head in the boot presumably after my sandwiches and one was chewing my backside when retrieving rest of gear from boot. Although a little unnerving I had a good laugh at my situation. Decided best bet in end was to set rod up by river in fear of catching an actual cow instead of the proverbial type.
On the fishing concentrated on top end of beat Dolmeudwy and orchard pools. Went through twice but no salmon seen or touched. Did get a little brownie on last cast which gave me a moment of false hope. Great day. Back again in 7days for another crack before end of season. Hopefully my four legged friends will be on supermarket shelf be then! Kidding!
