3 of us fishing, the oops trout was a beauty, about 2.5lb . Released straight from landing net and swam away stongly. Grayling all about 12oz. Saw an otter which was the highlight of the day.

River quite low for time of year which may have limited the number of swims suitable for trotting a float. One particular hot spot produced 5 fine grayling to 2lb 4oz but could not find another along the stretch. Physically demanding day for those of senior years.

River running clear , down to 1’2” on the gauge. Very cold and fished a light salmon/switch rod mainly from the bank to keep wading to a minimum. 3 1/2 hours long line nymphing produced a few fish , but takes were sporadic and all the fish were small.

The day was grey, cold and windless. Temperature was a constant 2-3 degrees. River at 1'4". All fish caught trotting. 10 fish in the 12-14 inch bracket, 2 at 15/16. The rest were 4-10. OOS trout - 3 between 9-10 inches, 1 over a pound. Super day in a super setting - good for the soul!

Couldn't resist coming back for another day here and I was not disappointed. Much the same pattern as last time, a slow start with only a couple of fish showing on the lower section in the morning but in the afternoon things looked up with a shoal of feeding grayling being located. They took the beaded ptn for a while then went off the feed. Further up in a nice long run the final fish of the day was the best, measuring in at about 17" and a good solid one at that. A fabulous way to end the day.

I’ve been wanting to stand in the river trotting a stick float ever since I started fly fishing and brought myself a pair of waders but have never got round to it until today.
The river was far from ideal being low, clear and icy cold but bites came from the off and we were soon catching Grayling on a regular basis trotting a stick float through the swim using a centre pin and maggots as bait. I had hoped to build the swim steadily through the day but it got too cold after 30-40 minutes wading, so it was out onto the bank for a cup of tea and a warm up before getting back at it. The Grayling seemed to ease off but a few OOS trout made an appearance before the cold got the better of us.
A very enjoyable and productive way to fish in the depths of winter…but roll on spring now!

Grayling were 11” and oos trout was 13”. Other subtle takes were missed or on then off, the feeding window was around 1pm. An Otter working the pool above me plus a few large dark olives coming off put a smile on my face.
