Apart from a bit of spider action in late pm, nothing happened until 9pm, when there was a good hatch of mixed olives (and some mayflies) and a good rise. Caught 17, 16 and 13 inch fish (largest 2 and a quarter lbs), lost 3 others. Nearly all jumped, and gave good runs downstream. All strong, fat fish, so they obviously are eating something (not just at 9-10 pm)

First time on the Usk. This is a beautiful stretch of river with a nice variety of water. Deep pools, fast riffles, pocket water… it was a joy to fish.

Second day of introducing two mates to the joy of river fly fishing. Got off to a good start the day before at Abernant. Much harder today. River low and clear with plenty of fly life. Yesterday was downstream nymphing, today upstream nymphing and dry. Different gravy!! In spite of a few takes, dry net for the newbies. Highlight of the day I caught a porker of a wbt, around the 3lb mark, certainly amongst my top 3 in the 15 years I've been fishing the Usk. Caught on an emerger, returned safely. Another decent fish taken off the top with an F-fly. Brilliant but tough going for the beginners.

3/4 day fishing dry fly (klinkhammer and parachute grey and brown patterns on size 16 barbless hook). Wading with staff from just above the quarry and travelling up stream for 2-3 miles. River conditions were great however strong winds made casting and fly presentation a real challenge. We had 22 lovely conditioned wild browns between us - majority around 1/2 pound or so although we missed many many takes due to poor line presentation. Much evidence of otter activity and spraint clearly indicated diet of crayfish.
