No fish caught - one hooked and lost. Access to fishing difficult - trees line most of banks, wading difficult due to deep or fast water, access to main channel therefore also difficult. Doubtful that we will fish this beat again.

I caught 3 trout biggest one was 40 cm. I caught them all with a Red Butted Hare's Ear with a 3 mm copper bead. Did not see much fish coming on top of the water. Some insects in the afternoon. Thanks mister Picton you were very helpful.

9 x trout 8-15 inches on spiders. Fairly high water, though not quite a flood and not too coloured. A very cold downstream wind and sunshine alternating with showers, fish initially reluctant to rise, had me fishing wet flies down and across. The problem with this is that trout tend to be lightly hooked. I lost more than I netted. Large dark olives hatched after lunch and, very briefly, a few march browns. On the subject of flies, the hawthorn trailing its black legs is now about - the first I have seen this year and well before St Mark's Day. And the martins have arrived.

Fished today by kind permission of Barry as a result of river in spate on previous day. Arrived at 9.30 with 0.9m on the gauge and river coloured but just fishable. Had a lovely day with with the 15 footer and in the enteraining company of fellow angler Bill. Later in the day river dropped a little to 0.8 and stated clearing. A mid teens fish was head and tailing just below the pub on the right bank which concentated the efforts for an hour but he remained unimpressed. Later we were treated to a fine work of art and engineering masquerading as the latest rod that Tom Hannon has manufactured at Usk. It was an effortless display of distance speycasting combined with an object of aesthetic beauty [the rod!]. A fitting end to a most enjoyable day.

Having sorted out the problems from the day before, we very much enjoyed our day on this beat. Extremely cold wind blew all day which put fish off from feeding on the surface and made for a hard days fishing anyway. My son caught two trout, the largest of approx 1lb. Both returned. Again, many thanks for all your help and advice. We will be back later in the year.

The river was dropping away and clearing after the recent rain. There was an appreciable downstream wind but because of the bend in the lower beat it was possible to get out of it to some extent. A sporadic hatch of olives from about 1 o'clock provoked some activity and I caught 3 fish of about 10" on dark spiders. Then found some rising fish in a quiet glide and caught 3 more from the surface. So, 6 altogether all returned.
