Rain overnight and all day made it very difficult fishing. No dry fly activity at all so used Gold head PTN to try to get down to the fish. Did hook and lose fish (3) but no fish landed. Looks a lovely river and would like to fish it in better conditions.

Cold, wet, windy from south east deteriorating as day progressed. Commenced fishing at 12 am. No fish rising below rapids but did have three pulls to nymphs and 1 salmon parr. Above rapids plenty of olives (pale wateries/spurwings?) coming off and fish rising all over river, but wind increased and rise ended. Left at 3pm with wind increasingly cold. 1 trout of 8 inches landed.

Water had risen slightly overnight due to heavy local rain. Fished all day with fly and spinner but no fish caught and no takes. Running fish seen again throughout the beat. Hard to cover them as most were running within a few feet of the far bank.

Area:Monnow
Beat:The Honddu, Llanthony
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
Fished for 2-3 hrs on the lower part of the beat in the morning in steady rain on rising water. Only raised one fish (approx 6-8"?) to a klink. Some good looking runs and holes which I am sure in more favourable conditions would produce a better return in what was a wonderful secretive world under the trees.

Some mayfly visible but few rising fish whilst I was there from 9am to 3pm. I stuck to weighted nymphs, catching 8 WBT, one of which was close to 2 pounds and several others around or just over the pound mark.

Area:Llynfi Dulas
Beat:The Llynfi Dulas, Lower Beat
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
10 x trout 6-12 inch, a couple on a small Klinkhammer, the rest on a size 12 Monnow Gosling. A morning which was only slightly damp encouraged me to go fishing after lunch. The afternoon turned out to be extremely wet indeed, but if you wait until all the ducks are in line, you never get to go fishing at all! Despite the downpour, trout started to rise to mayfly about 3.30 and it was busy for a while with mainly 10-12 inch fish and several larger ones bumped off. It ended quite abruptly around 6 when the Dulas coloured up, as it is rather prone to do. Two years since I fished this beat - I didn't bother during the drought last year - and it is remarkable how overgrown it has become, mainly at the bottom end (well beyond the caravan site) and also the top towards Tregunter Farm. It's still full of fish though.
