We arrived to find a swollen, rising river and it rose a further 3 foot during our session. We were forced further back up the bank on 3 occasions. All manner of debris was piling through the river with relentless regularity - bottles, branches, whole trees and even a TV set were seen!
Fishing was difficult and it was a case of settling on a couple of pegs with a slacker area on the inside at the bottom of the beat by the cottage. 1 rod blanked but the other connected with 3 Barbel, one of which slipped the hook. The other 2 were banked and went 5lb 2oz and 6lb 7oz.
We would like to return in better conditions. The hill is a killer though. Having assessed it on foot first of all, we knew we had the vehicle to cope with it and we were able to park close to the river. Travel very light if you need to walk though.

Fished Courtfield all day on 7th and morning of 8th. When we arrived river very coloured and pushing through with a constant amount of debris. A lot of river side trees must have been uprooted! The river rose about 6ft during the day, by mid afternoon on saturday most of the lenght was hardly fishable. Our party of two spent both days in swims one and two and fished under the rod tips, 5oz stuggling to hold. It didnt stop the fish from feeding and we managed 31 barbel between us. 17 on saturday and 14 Sunday morning. This included my first Wye double at 10lb 4oz, 3 over 9 lbs and a number of big 8lb plus fish.
This was our first trip to Courtfield, access is easy, under normal conditions plenty of fishable swims and the fish are certainly bigger than what we have seen elsewhere on the Wye. I needed every oz of the 12lb line i was using to move the fish off the bottom in the flow.
Stayed at the Anchor Inn in the village, which i would recommend, good food and accomodating, we will be back. Well done to those we met who also caught in some very difficult conditions.

Arrived on the water at 17.30 looking for that evening rise again. Fished the flatter pool tails & finished with 7 trout to 15 ins with most between 10-12ins all caught on light coloured deer hair sedge pattern. Shared my fishing with a very friendly, playful otter from 21.00, I will be back for the day when there is less water on. Good evenings sport in fantastic surroundings.

Between the two of us we caught 8 fish, all Barbel and all caught on Elipse pellets. 2 fish were between 4-5lb, biggest fish was 8lb 10oz. River conditions were like chocolate and flowing very fast. 5oz lead struggled to hold river bed, had to increase it to 10oz but still struggled. Lots of debris coming down river including a large piece which looks to have broken from the bank, trees and all, which resembled Tracy Island! This was our first visit and definitely will go again.

We arrived about 12.30 to heavy rain and a brown rising river, but still looked fishable. We tried a couple of swims for half an hour for one barbel. Then a passing dog walker warned us that the access road was beginning to flood and so it proved, water pouring off the road had also turned the track down to the river into a stream. We decided not to wait for it to get any worse and left at 2.00. A pity because I'm sure we'd have had a few more. Still waiting for Summer but not holding our breath.
