I caught my first ever Barbel 5lbs 13oz on a Halibut Pellet at 2.45pm. I recieved lots of good advice from Don Macer-Wright and his friend Rudy when I arrived. But despite moving swim four times and spending the last three hours of the day fishing Wyebank Pool, I only had the one bite all day.

Fishing:Trout (River)

12 x trout 6-9 inches. Water still pretty high and fast but has now lost its colour. Nothing rising naturally, but a few fish prepared to come up to a small Klinkhammer. Good to be back on a small stream after all the floods.

Tough going today. Arrived at 2pm, first 2 casts resulted in a Chub and a Barbel, then next cast a Barbel lost at the net (hook pull). Then it went quiet. Changes in tactics, baits and swims didn't help. Final swim chosen at 8 pm produced an 8lbs Barbel, a Chublet and another Barbel lost in a snag at last knockings. River rising slowly about an inch per hour and a thick milk chocolate colour, hard work.

Fresh 10 pound salmon from Arnie's Pool on size 8 Red Francis at 8pm - water evidently clear enough for modest-sized fly.

No fish caught but 2 pulls. River high and in excellent condition. As a first time visitor to this beat, a better description of how to obtain access to the river at the top of beat would have saved some time.

At lunchtime realised rain had stopped. River at 1.5m. Booking first class as normal. On river by 3 to find colour clearing. Fished through till dark. Finished with several barbel around 5 to 6lbs plus one of 9lbs 7oz. Also several chub to around 4lbs - lost 3 barbel in same snag - is it now time to put away the flood gear or is there still more to come?
