This beat is a dream if you like fast water fishing for Barbel, Chub and Dace. The cribs produced good mixed bags. Again Don's advice was spot on. I think we benefitted from this beat being lightly fished to date due to the floods. Best rod took 21 barbel fishing morning and evening session. Some baby barbel as rare as doubles were a real treat. My favourite beat of the week. Again a dream location and a must on our return next year!

Coloured cock salmon, about 16lbs, taken on a small double fly on full floating line from The Island pool.

Fishing the top of this beat too much of a scramble.

Beat:Lower Escley

Fishing:Trout (River)

Had a trout with the first cast and figured it would be downhill from there and we weren't disappointed! This is a challenging stream to fish, generally shallow and in summer trim very clear. The trout will no doubt see you long before you see them. We only fished the bottom reaches of this beat and landed two trout and a minnow (!), the trout coming from the deeper pools on nymph fished as part of a duo. Plenty of fly life about, mainly sedge and a few upwings (including one or two mayfly), but very few fish rising. Can't fault the beauty of the beat, but it was hard work!

Two rods fished, seven barbel ranging from 5 to 9lb and seven chub from 2 to 4lb between us. All fish in immaculate condition taken on pellets and meat. Good directions from WUF and a beautiful place to fish. Many thanks.

Arrived 8.am. Raining steadily, river appeared to be slightly up and clear. As on previous visit, we fished same swims - myself on left bank and fellow angler M right bank. I caught 1 chubb approx 5lbs first cast then nothing more. M caught 1 barbel approx 4lbs around midday and that was that.

Although fish catch was disappointing, the rain stopped and weather improved. A pleasant day in the Wye Valley. Thank you W.U.F
