Fishing:Trout (River)

Slow evening after a couple of sharp showers. Felt cold but probably wasn't. 2 brown trout, one of 8 inches in perfect condition and 2nd good fish of 12inches (1 lb). First rose to a small dry and the second took a GB hairs ear nymph. Few other takes to the dry missed. Larger fish taken.

28inch (9lbs est) slightly coloured hen fish at 0720 on fly. Spent most of the afternoon and evening chasing Grayling. About dozen came to my hand and I missed 3 times as many on a small fluffy Sedge. Great fun, great day out, thank you!

None caught, six misses early in the session around 7am, after that nothing!
Maybe if the river had been lower, it could have been waded, but it wasn't and I spent more time tangled in trees, bushes etc. Although a cement walkway exists it looks as if there used to be timber on top of it, but that has mostly gone, the cement though is was thin in places, once I realised that I felt safer using the bank. Overall though it was challenging and enjoyable.

More difficult than normal but four Chub and three Barbel. Still enjoyable as usual to be on the Wye. Fish mostly on Prawn and Shrimp boilie and a couple on 12mm pellets.
Parking a bit tricky as still pretty boggy inside the gate. Also watch out for grounding the car when leaving to join the road as there is a ridge. Will bring car with higher clearance next time!

12 barbel caught, 10 from one swim near top of length, caught on a mixture of halibut, elips and crab pellets. If fishing this length, don't bother with the bottom access as there are very few spots you can get to the river. The section marked as a wood has now been cut down and consists mainly of impenetrable scrub. We half expected to meet Dr Livingston and a team of native porters. Forunately access at the top of the length is good.

Two small trout, both to Copper Johns fished in the fast water. The rest had fled. And I found out why. This is usually an excellent beat. I've been fishing it for years and have always enjoyed it. However the campsite which once only partially encroached on the beat has gradually spread to the other bank and now (alas!) adjacent fields downriver. My fishing was punctuated by children on rope swings, dogs swimming, holidaymakers skimming stones and a family having a bbq. My favorite moment, though, was the young couple who had sneaked away for some privacy only to be disappointed and embarrassed to find me lurking in the undergrowth tying a fly on.
Time to find a new beat...
