Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:2
Fished both sections from 12pm to 7pm in cloudy, showery and thundery conditions with a light upstream breeze.
Water level and clarity excellent. Only a few natural rises, but some fly life about. I fished dry ( adams ), and caught 4 trout in great condition, best 2 around a pound, plus a similar sized grayling. Must have missed a further dozen. R fished mainly with a nymph, catching 6 with best 2 over a pound. Rewarding fishing, each fish had to be earned making it an absorbing day out, despite the soaking.

Conditions looked perfect for a good afternoon/evening session but the weather worsened and the fish were reluctant to feed. One Barbel (7lb 9ozs), 5 Chub (to 4lb) and an Eel (2lb) between two rods. Fish fell to Elips pellets and meat. Torrential rain from 7pm turned the banks into a slippery mud track which was extremely dangerous and difficult to escape from. Take great care if the weather turns in like it did for us.

Fishing:Coarse

Another interesting and worthwhile day on Caradoc. Struggled in the morning fishing the usually productive bottom end but a move upstream produced the goods. Ended up with 4 barbel and 4 chub between two rods. Largest chub went exactly 5lb.

On arrival to the river it was evident that the recent rainfall had raised the level and colour to which we thought we would have a good Day. We fished a variety of pegs throughout the stretch with a total of 8 barbel and 5 Chub caught between the 4 of us. Great Days fishing with some excellent pegs, would recommend this stretch to any keen course angler.

Lower am - 5 Brown Trout, all males, best 1.4lbs approx 12 inches o/a. Remaining 4, 6" to 8". Taken on Willow Fly Dry and PT Nymph. Good sport.
Upper pm - I raised a lot of decent Browns but could not connect with them however I hooked a very nice Brown approx 3lbs on a Willow Fly Dry around the 5pm. Hatching Willow Fly seemed at that point to disappear so changed over to Caddis Nymph and had 4 small Browns and at one point was snapped cleanly by a very strong pull, we will never know by what and with 3lb tippet No chance of stopping whatever it was.
No fish were taken, I like to think they will be there when I come back again.

Two rods caught 5 brown trout - best 1.2lbs. All on dry fly.
A lot of camping going on spoils a lot of the fishing. We don't see as many fish here as we used to!

Area:Usk
Beat:Glanusk Estate Fishery
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
Caught one Brown Trout at 1 1/2 lb, stunning fish, caught in a quiet stretch near the end of the bottom beat. As I was there not long after the 'GreenMan' festival, the estate looked like a scene from a war movie!! Staff were very pleasant though, and the fishing is generally easy to get to, it's even possible to take your car along the top beat. I haven't fished all the beats of the Usk and Wye, however this one is going to be very hard to better. For afternoon amusement I was lucky enough to see two fighter jets practice their moves going over and around the valley
My only disappointment is that there are no beats available this week, or I'd be back!!

Fished 3 swims between Vanstone Pool and the Rope Pool. Conditions were good with just a tinge of colour but was only saved from a blank by 2 barbel in last half hour. Swims were pretty good for access on left bank but although this fishery is said to be double bank there were no access details provided for the right bank and from what I could see only 2 fishable swims. There were quite a few salmon jumping in the Rope Pool area.
