Beautiful autumn day. The river was clearing and falling, so the conditions looked auspicious. 2lb and 2.5lb wild browns caught on a small stoat's tail, but no sign of the larger cousins until virtually the last cast of the day. Then a 15lb hen salmon caught again on a small stoat's tail. As the salmon was landed two otters started playing in the pool in front of us. Hard to imagine a better end to the day.
Quick word about Glanusk. Very warm welcome from the estate office and useful advice on flies and which pools to concentrate efforts on. The banks and access are in excellent condition and the river there is swarming with dippers which is always a good sign. Cannot recommend more highly.

River 2ft 2" and 5ft visibility; near perfect. Fished the morning and had a cock salmon of 19lbs on a #6 Bann shrimp from the top of Rock pool which now resides in Abercynrig hatchery. Fish showing in all pools fished and had another offer in the Gravel catch.
In evening the other rod had 2 more salmon from the Rock pool.

Beat:Cefnllysgwynne
Fishing:Winter Grayling
Two small grayling caught on PTN. The river was quite high and rising during my visit. I covered most of the beat and never saw a single fish move on or near the surface. My hopes were raised for a moment when I heard several loud splashes under an oak tree. At first I though it was a big fish noisily taking something off the surface, but it turned out to be a clumsy sqirrel dropping acorns into the river. I found this a difficult day, but I'll be back.

There had been heavy overnight rain so the river was both rising and colouring up. Did not see a fish rise all day. Fished Czech nymph style and took half a dozen out of season trout and half a dozen grayling. Best fish was the first one - a grayling of a pound and a half or so but the others were all on the small side. Pink bugs proved the best patterns. Despite the awful weather (it continued to rain for most of the day) it was still a joy to be back on the Irfon. There cannot be many places that can match the beauty of this valley.

Area:Upper Wye
Beat:Ty Newydd
Fishing:Salmon
No. of Anglers:1
No salmon caught or even seen all day. Water level still high and a bit cloudy so wading access limited. Couldn't reach planks. However, very beautiful beat with plenty of wildlife and, after below-zero temperature and mist to start, a sunny day.
First time on any Booking Office beat, so thanks to support from your staff. Will book again, when water conditions are better for fishing.
PS: quite a bit of H balsam on banks - is this a problem?

Started at first light in zero degrees in the deep water at the top end of the beat. Caught barbel of 6-12 and 7-10 in the morning, on pellets. No action in the afternoon, but the sunny weather more than compensated.

A tough day on this usually productive beat, with the river still racing through and very coloured. We started off on the bend at the bottom of the beat, but after one 5lb barbel to RB in 4 hours it was time to take the roving approach. RW eventually found some feeding barbel and caught 3 up to 7.5lb on pellet. 5oz was necessary to hold bottom in most swims.
