Seriously tough fishing thanks to a hard and seriously cold easterly wind blowing upstream. Oh and the fact that I seemed to startle a few fishing cormorants whilst working my way upstream. Not surprisingly there were no hatches and certainly nothing really in the way of surface activity. Using nymphs I worked pretty much the entire beat but to no avail. Then, with only a few casts left before it got too dark to fish I spotted the smallest of rises from under the railway bridge. Assuming it to be a small trout and out of sheer desperation I switched to a small dry and had a go. After many ignored attempts i must have fooled the fish into thinking a small hatch was taking place as I eventually had a take. To my surprise it wasn't a small trout but a lovely 16 inch oos grayling which was gently unhooked and quickly returned. Shame there were no trout but still a nice way to end such a demanding day. Cheers as always WUF for your advice.

Fished 9.45am to 5.30pm with no success or action. Both fished fly almost all day, but might have had more success spinning. Focused on Corner Tree and Vanstone which fished nicely. Other pools still seemed a bit high. It's good to see the work WUF have done on improving access - it will make the upper part of the beat much easier to get at once the river drops a bit.

First outing today, well done to all the hardy souls who have already been out and about!! Still cold and windy, no fly life to be seen or any trout - not even any birds (or bats) feeding. So a blank, having stuck with deep nymphs all the time. Even the afternoon sun had no impact. Still, lovely to be back out, here's to next time.

Caught a 14lber on a red Flying 'C' from Martin's Bar (far bank). Bumped another one off and saw fish moving in a 'porpoising fashion' off the tail of Martin's Island. Out again tomorrow!
