Arrived at 10 a.m. with a hatch of olives all ready underway. March browns hatched at midday along with a huge hatch of grannom which went on for a couple of hours. Very few risers. Had pulls on olive, march brown nymphs and green sedge pupa at appropriate times but none landed except a runt of a salmon parr. A glorious warm and sunny spring day with temp nudging 70 degrees.

Beautiful spring day, if a bit bright for fishing. Still, when you're somewhere as lovely as this beat you don't get too frustrated. There were a few grannom coming off throughout the day with a much more sustained hatch in the late morning. The trout were feeding on the surface at this time and a couple were taken on a parachute Adams. All the other fish came to small weighted nymphs. Great to be back on the river.

Penpont really delivered the goods today, despite the bright conditions and probably the warmest day of the year so far. Relatively little hatching, so nymphing was the order of the day. Five good trout 11", 15", 15", 16" and a cracking 18" (all returned). Drove back to Hampshire feeling happy after four glorious spring days in the Usk valley. The chalkstreams will have much to live up to when they open!

Another lovely warm day. This is a great beat with so much water that I think you'd need a couple of days to cover it all properly.
Started around 10am, nothing rising but managed to tempt an 8" trout up with small olive pattern. A light hatch from about 11:30-12:15, brought the trout up but I failed to tempt any of them with the 5 patterns I tried. There were a few March Browns in amongst them but it was difficult to see exactly what they were keyed in on.
In the afternoon heat I switched to weighted caddis pupa and had two more, about 9" and 13", both returned.
Generally, the trout were pretty wary today. I blundered along the path to couple of pools only to see swirls as the fish all darted for cover, and a few inexpert casts quickly stopped them rising on at least two occasions. It was probably partly due to the unseasonably bright conditions.
The wading is a little tricky in places and I should have brought my staff for the quicker water. Falling over and filling my waders would have been unpleasant had it not been so lovely and warm.
All in all, a very enjoyable day out in beautiful surroundings.

A very bright and warm day. Sporadic small hatches of LDOs and March Browns in the morning, nothing after 1.30pm. 2 BT on olive emerger and GRH nymph. Kingfishers and an otter made for a lovely day.

Fished for about 4 hours in late morning/early afternoon. The river was fairly low and clear and still quite cold despite it being a mild sunny day. Very few flies about and no fish were seen rising. 3 trout caught short line nymphing, the biggest about 10-11 inches.
