Lovely day, river low and v. clear despite the recent rain. Trickle of mayflies through the day, and others, did not excite the trout (although I had to leave by 6.30 so may have picked up later). Landed 4 (9 to 11") and missed more, all on para dries.

I thought a break from fishing the Usk would be a good idea so a camping/fishing trip staying at LLanthony Priory and trying a new beat was on. Had a great day sneaking up river, landing the Elk hair caddis on a sixpence between tree branches and at the necks of pools. Around midday onwards there was a good hatch of a variety of upwings and caddis with a few Dancia coming off. Some good fish showed themselves but a clumsy cast would put them down. The fish were in excellent condition with the biggest at 12".

Fished 10am-2pm hoping for a mayfly hatch which never really materialised. The odd mayfly that were on the water the trout were quite willing to rise for. Stuck to the dry fly all day and managed 5 trout 8-10inches from the faster, shallower sections of the river. Nice beat and hopefully next year I catch the mayfly hatch. Fished the Dulas brook 2:30-4pm. Few more mayfly hatching here, though many of the pools lacked flow. Caught 3 trout, 6-8inches, on the dry fly again. Enjoyable days fishing.

Wonderful day on this beautiful beat. All trout taken on the nymph (PTN). Some lovely fish rising under the trees in the flats at the top of the beat but couldn't get near them with a dry fly. Abundance of fly life including quite a few Yellow Mays.
Managed to fall in twice despite felt-soled boots and wading staff!! Wading difficulty not to be underestimated on this beat.
Well done WUF, thank you.

Highish water after recent rain but clear. A very beautiful setting. We had some small trout (best about 1 lb), but yet again we were unable to stay for the evening. Wonder what we missed?

Well......a rare absolutely rubbish day! Have fished this beat many times and only once before have I known it as dead as this and that was on a cold day in April! It was warm there was a constant trickle of mayfly, plenty of sedge and some olives but no fish. I tried every method known to mankind and finally winkled out a small brown trout late in the afternoon on a sparkle hares ear nymph. Frankly the river looked 'dead' all day, it was quite low and it was bright and sunny but in saying that there are plenty of shady, deeper sections of water for fish to hold in but I didn't see a single fish rise all day. It was a bit worrying!

Fished 3-6pm, may flies coming off all afternoon. One 6 inch fish and all the rest were 10-15 inch beauties. Biggest fish weighed at 1lb14oz. Lost a better fish 50 yards above weir. All on dry may fly patterns. Fantastic.
