The Abernant is a good beat for trout and grayling fishing (and from time to time with higher water levels it can be a place for the occasional salmon). It fished particularly well for me and while I used nymphs for most of the day I fished dry flies during the late afternoon and despite numerous rising fish I was not able to catch any on the dry. So all in all happy days on the Wye again.

2 x trout to 1.5 pounds, 7 x grayling to 0.75 pounds. River pretty low, strong showers through the day, and a general shortage of surface activity. OB's contribution was managing to miss three nice grayling risen to the dry fly. Meanwhile CB caught the rest on nymphs.

Arrived around midday, river looked very good, just a hint of colour, weather was mostly sunny with the odd shower. Started by walking to the far end of the beat and noticed the odd fish topping on the way so started with a Daddy as there where lots in the fields. I was covering fish but had no takes on it at all, there was also no hatch going on and very little insect life so quite what the trout were taking was a mystery. I soon switched to my faithful Greenwells Glory dry fly which I find will produce almost anywhere and so it proved to be the case today. Targeting the steadier glides I managed plenty of takes, missing most unfortunately but I did manage two respectable sized brown trout in excellent, hard fighting condition, both returned none the worse.
Lovely afternoon on this great beat, thank you Wye and Usk Foundation, I'll be back for more.

I returned after a week to see if I could find grayling and the bigger fish that I know are in the river.
It was a day of short sporadic hatches and fish totally preoccupied with something other than what I was chucking at them. Both nymphs and drys were nudged or just plainly ignored....until around 1pm when I arrived at the same small and shallow pool where I caught both trout and a grayling the week before, here again feeding was in earnest and I caught a fish of each species, both really strong and fit and around 12"on a Greenwells 14.....struggled on until heavy rain but the big ones eluded me.
