River too high to wade - it was showing just over a metre at Climery. We couldn't see any features to cast to and the water pulled our nymphs along at a merry rate so no fish. My son got a new fly rod and reel for Christmas and he was desperate to try them out no matter what the conditions so we took a bit of a punt on the water levels. We met the very friendly Dai who kindly lent us a long-handled landing net as we had to fish from the banks. Unfortunately it stayed unused. The Irfon is a beatiful stretch of river and we'll definitely return when levels are a bit more sensible.

My first time on this beat and considering how bad the weather has been recently I was lucky to get a chance to fish. The river was at about 0.5m on the gauge and unfortunately the water was still coloured. For this reason I only fished a small portion of the upper part of the beat as I was reluctant to wade upstream in coloured water I wasn't familiar with, especially knowing there are deep holes dotted along the beat.
Despite this I managed to find two nice fish of 12-14 inches using a heavy green czech nymph on the point and a red tag nymph on the dropper and lost several more.
All in all a great afternoon on a new beat.

When I eventually found the fish it was a fish a chuck. What a river - jewel in the Crown in my opinion.

Arrived at the river expecting the worst after all the flooding elsewhere, but it was in surprisingly good shape - high, but very little debris coming down and very fishable. It was warm, sunny, and a gentle breeze, so ideal conditions for this time of year. Fished feeder with pellet with no action at all during the morning but had two barbel lunchtime, 10lb 1oz and 7.5lb. Thereafter quiet for the rest of the day but two barbel at this time of the year is a result...!

Level fishable and had dropped a little from the day before when we fished the upper beat. But the wind blowing upstream made things pretty hairy (took me 4 attempts to get the car door open!) to the extent that even with heavy French nymph in it was necessary to water haul. My companion landed one WBT around 3/4 lb, I lost another at 2 lb plus but managed to land another touching 3lb. A vindication of what the Foundation has said about fish stocks on this stretch!
