Well I just don't understand it. Not a touch, but that's fishing! River conditions were fine, wind was a bit of a pig but I ran the flies[cascades and shrimp patterns] through all the best bits and cast a FC into the hotspots too. Not to worry, the seasons just begun...
One point to note; the pool on left bank, outside the island, is a little deeper than last season, the collapsed right bank has pushed the main flow a little more towards mid-river which means that, for those who don't like deep wading, this pool can be fished quite well from the right bank now. Even a switch rod can access the best of the run with ease...

River slightly coloured and weather traditional bank holiday howling winds and rain. Nothing rising but managed a few up to 16in on nymphs.

3 Trout

River very high and coloured, no fish seen access not the easiest and very confusing parking instructions.

12lb sea liced hen fish. Spinning. Landed by Bob Gardner & safely released.

1 Salmon

13 x trout 6-8 inches, Goldhead Hare's Ear nymph. This one has also woken up, with the trout inhabiting the fast runs rather than the dubs. I didn't see any rises. I'm afraid the delayed forestry thinning work has made rather a mess of the centre section of this beat for now, but there is still a good 4 hours fishing here.

13 Trout

Fished upper bigsweir today had one salmon 20lb plus on a No 5 gold Mepps single hook, after 10 minutes it shed the hook but took photo of fish on the surface !!! Other fish seen running on beat !!!

River running clear but very windy. A few small LDO hatched at around 11. Four fish on nymphs Hares Ear and Olive. One on a Klinkhammer.

5 Trout

Fished the Usk Reservoir for the first time in appalling conditions this Easter. I was the only one mad enough to stay for 5 hours in torrential rain and wind. However, the good news is that I managed to catch one fish on worm, a good specimen Rainbow Trout weighing 2lb, as fly fishing was out of the question. A note for some of my fellow anglers, clear up your rubbish as I collected fishing line and weights from one of the banks.

Very enjoyable day on the Usk for the first time nice to cast a line. Didn't see any fish or rises. Thanks to Barry the owner for his advice and a big thankyou to Gary Evans at Gary Evans Newport for his help and generosity.

8 x trout 6-8 inches, plus a few salmon smolts, already beginning to silver up. A dark and stormy morning with rain on the way. Nothing rising on the way up, so fished with a Goldbead Hare's Ear nymph. However, the last two fish were caught on a Deer Hair Emerger after being seen rising splashily to large dark olives at the top end.
