Beautiful but very cold morning on the LLangoed beat, the water was running gin clear and the Grayling took a bit of searching for but once found came consistently for a couple of hours. They mostly came to small hares ear and pheasant tail jigs fished on a french leader.

17 x grayling 6-16 inches, Pink Shrimp and Tungsten Hare's Ear, 1 x out of season trout 12 inches. A dull day, slightly warmer than of late. Lugg water beautifully clear with that slight grey-green tinge, but with 1 foot 3 inches on the Byton gauge, a bit higher and more turbulent than ideal in my opinion. Thus there was much tinkering around with the weight of the nymphs in order to try and get the right result. Mostly shotts, but a couple of good ones turned up as the light faded. Interesting how often that happens.

Decided to see how arctic the grayling were feeling today, after two consecutive nights of minus 8 and one of minus 2! Arrived at 11.30 a.m. with the air having risen to zero degrees (which got as high a two later on), ice in the margins and the water temperature <1 degree all day. No sun but kept warm with the neoprene's first trip out this year. A lovely day for trotting the centre pin with no wind at all. The grayling duly obliged with fish from the off, until exceedingly cold feet drove me from the river four hours later, with another 15" fish on the dangle from what proved to be the last run of the day. Found fish in the creases and also still in quite shallow water. Fish from 10-15 inches, around the 1.5 pound mark. The trout were at it as well and two fat 3.5 - 4 pound chub also found the red and white maggot combo enticing. All in all a very rewarding day. Who says mega drops in temperature put fish off the feed??!! Me, but what do I know?
8 Trout, 21 Grayling, 2 Chub
