Struggled today to find the bigger fish, grayling came on the the feed for one hour at 12pm- 1pm and not a touch after. Largest 3: 14-15 inches the others between 6-12 inches, all taking shrimp patterns on the point. Nothing taking beadhead on dropper.

A very cold day, resulting in no bites and no fish which was disappointing as this was the final outing to this river this season.

Nothing caught, river coloured and high. Was there more for the practice than the catching.

Beat:Court of Noke
Fishing:Winter Grayling

Fished from 10:00 until 14:00 hours trotting maggot. Touched a couple of fish but failed to hook anything. Fortunately had my fly rod with me and had a couple of hours in the afternoon using a heavy hares ear, immediately hooking a 17" grayling which took about 10 minutes to land. River in good condition, weather dry but gusty wind. Quite a lot of trees across the river collecting debris, but still plenty of good fishable water.

Lovely mild day on the Lyepole beat but the grayling were still playing at hard to find but did have 4 in the end including one of 14 inches that was very pleasing. All fish took a small gold bead nymph instead of many other patterns tried. A great day though in a lovely place.

For first time this winter I neither caught nor saw any grayling on this beat..not a touch despite fishing at all depths and with many changes of nymphs. The two small trout, 8"ish, came to size 16 hares ear on the bottom. The water was very coloured to begin with but had cleared by 3pm.

4 x little grayling 6-10 inches, Tungsten Hare's Ear. Not an easy day, although water conditions looked reasonable. I spent much time experimenting with weights and patterns of nymphs, eventually going to some rarely visited corners of the fly box, all without very much result. Having no less than 2 separate otters fishing the beat, one below the bridge and one above, working all the pools very thoroughly, may have had something to do with it. At least that is my excuse. It's one of the great skills in angling that - always to be ready with an excuse for lack of success! I enjoyed otter watching instead.

Arrived at about 10 o'clock to find the river at about normal winter level and running clear. Mild and overcast with a bit of rain in the morning, so was hoping for some Barbel action which never came (water temp still a bit low maybe?). This was made up for with a Grayling in my first swim and 5 Chub (lost another to a hook pull) between two other spots. Most fish fell to feeder fished pellet and maggots, with one of the Chub falling to trotted maggots.
Nice peaceful day by the river :)

Weather and water conditions were perfect, but it lacked the fish activities. Hard to find the fish and we're surprised with the browns we caught. Not that we were catching them, but the condition they were in. It was as if it was spring time, perfect condition. Mild winter strikes again!!! Even with the lack of fish numbers it was still a pleasure to be back out on the river.
