Fishing too low for salmon so fished evening for trout with a friend. Plenty of mayfly around so fished the woodstream with a mayfly nymph and hooked two fish to threequarter pound each. Ken fished sedge and haresear nymph with no success.
Plenty of rises but no takes for both of us in the last hour on white wulff and spent mayfly patterns which was quite strange. Lovely evening's fishing despite the last hour.
A salmon showed twice at the chine around 7pm. Not a large fish, around 5lb.

A warm, overcast day with plenty of fly life on the water throughout the day. However, the river was very low (some way below the bottom of the local gauge) so the fish were reluctant to show. Some splashy rises, but the fish were easily spooked and very selective.

A few fish rising in the morning, then very quiet the rest of the day. Water quite low, chilly wind blowing down river. Very enjoyable day despite only 1 fish which took a small green Klink. Hope to return for another attempt. Lovely beat.

Fished 1830 to 2130. Lots of mayfly, and lots of rises, mainly small but some bigger fish. Seven returned safely, and one, a 10 inch, taken for breakfast. River very low indeed, but this opened up some pools I have been unable to access before.

Mayfly weren't in abundance but sporadic this evening, I guess due to the intermittent drizzle or showers. Had a surprise from the better fish which hadn't given their position up and missed more than I hooked!
Finished the last cast with a 15 inch fatty. Fishing evenings is harder when you've been up since 3.30 for work!

With the Usk still painfully low I made Talybont the focus of my efforts for this third camping trip in a month or so. The surface water is distinctly tepid but both today and on the Monday trout were willing to play ball when the wind got up and created the necessary ripple with a bit of scuff to it. Much of the first morning was spent encouraging the wind to stir itself, as the early mist coated the hills, but by the evening when I returned it was stronger and the best fish landed from the east shore was perhaps a pound and a quarter. I chose the opposite bank on Tuesday, and fished two black dries kept apart by a semi-sacrificial wet spider (for leader-sinking purposes) on the lower dropper, never switching to the rod carrying a team of wets although surface activity to naturals was limited. After two early losses of modest specimens I then made a steady succession of catches, marvelling at the strength of these half- and three-quarter pound trout, until clocking off at about one o'clock for the walk back to the car. Much of this was left-shoulder casting but at least the falling levels are opening up more of the bank at this intriguing lake, which was unusually generous today. A cuckoo called repeatedly from the woodland on this west shore - I more or less set my watch or mark the calendar by the Talybont cuckoo these days.
