Although the river was low and clear there was a little cloud cover, which appeared to have the desired effect! Largest barbel was just under 10lb and largest chub just over 4.5lb - and was smashed up a total of 4 times on 12lb hook link! Started slowly but after that caught fish throughout the day. Everything caught on halibut pellets (wouldn't touch meat or corn), with the barbel being very particular - they wouldn't touch anything other than 2 x 8ml pellets glued to the hair. Anything smaller or larger was refused. Chub would take any size!! Fished the bottom end, just on the back end of the broken water before the bend. Casting has to be very precise as there are large weed beds and a number of snags under the far bank. Another fabulous day on the Wye and great tips from the bailiff. Have already booked my next visit!!

River low and much too warm. 10lb fairly fresh salmon and 11/2 lb chub luckily landed on size 10 Executioner fly. Both returned and swam away strongly.,

Fishing:Trout (River)

Ty Newydd was very hard today. Fished 9-6 p.m. Water 19-20 degrees, and air as well, so a big air temperature drop thank God, but maybe the fish didn't approve of the drop in pressure (as much as I enjoyed the drop in temperature!)?
Pretty windy, downstream and intensifying throughout the day. Some midge off and on from around midday, intermittent sparse YMs and also sparse small olives / PWs. There were occasional rises but these all proved to be small 8-10" trout and grayling, bar one 13" trout. The bigger fish often seem to go AWOL here at this time of year under adverse conditions! Well, for me anyway. Fish taken mainly on HE and PW emergers but also a couple on Baby Sunfly. Also on small nymphs and a small Greenwell's Spider whilst fishing spiders. Didn't dredge the depths today but I suspect that it wouldn't have made too much difference. I just don't think they were on, with little incentive to get active. All fish were quite heavily parasitised with Argulus lice. Anticipation of a good day at TN is frequently indicated at arrival by the sight of fish rising above the house, up to and in the Erwood Pool, and then also some still rising when one leaves. I didn't see a single fish move there today!
Ho hum, there's always next time - it's a great beat where I've had some truly wonderful days in the past, but maybe it was not to be on the back of the hottest spell since 1976! Thankfully, at least it is now to get cooler.
