Fishing:Winter Grayling

A cool one when I arrived at the Abbey Dore beat at ten , about three degrees and sunny , gorgeous views of the Golden Valley , as always , and the little Dore looked an absolute picture , as I started working a tiny single flashback PTN . . . . .

Still tight under the canopy , but always fun here . . First fish , a feisty brownie , great condition , about twelve inches and quickly released . . . Next pool same again , good take on the PTN , another brownie , where were all the grayling from summer time !!!!!!

Worked slowly upstream , changed to a black klinkhammer , a different rise , and playing him in a deep pool , slipped a grayling to the net , superb , at last , thought the Dore was getting thin on the ground of grayling . Must admit water very cold now , but still flowing well . . . Fish was about ten inches and slipped back in . . . .

A couple of good rises spotted so worked my way upstream , another good take on the klinkhammer , and another brownie , superb condition , and a real tubby one , about ten inches , slipped back in wished him well for the next season . .

Had another two brownies , both off the top , no more grayling putting in an appearance today , still a fun three plus hours , and a pleasant mooch up the Dore , perhaps a decent cold snap is just what we need on this little river to bring the Grayling on the go , back soon , Shall give the Arrow a bash in a few days . . . . . . Spot on !!!!!!

Blank for grayling, 14 x out of season trout 7- 13 inches, Green Insect. A very cold day, especially the morning with a proper white frost. I struggled and failed to get in contact with grayling during the morning with nymphs. Changed to dry fly after seeing a few dark olives, but every rising fish turned out to be an out of season trout.

Cold one today. Frost in the fields and a slow start searching for the fish using czech nymphs and hares ears. Once the sun came out we switched to dries and my dad got into a couple of good grayling using a parachute, the best weighing at one and a quarter pounds.
It took me until last light to get among the action, landing two smallish grayling on a kilinkhammer in the pool downstream of the bridge. Not very big perhaps, but made the day worthwhile.

River low and clear. First frost of the season, bright sunshine. Not ideal barbel conditions! Hence, no fish. Tried pellet feeder, meat, cheese paste, small baits, big baits, four swims(mainly the groins downstream of hut). Couldn’t even manage a consolation chub! Beautiful stretch, will be back when conditions improve.

A hard frost the night before followed by a cold, bright and sunny day.
Fished pellets for the entire day however did not get a single bite.

arrived at 0900 on a cold crisp sunny morning. walked down to the river to discover the other bank was very busy with about 12 blokes fishing which left me with very little choice of swims. to cut a long story short the day was a complete waste of time, mainly ( i think ) because of the amount of noise the "anglers" on the other bank were making, they never stopped talking to each other at the top of their voices all day , they were mainly moaning about the lack of fish, from what i could ( easily ) overhear these guys had travelled from portsmouth area to fish for a few days.
no fish caught .
the amount of anglers allowed to fish the other bank is going to ruin this beat, it is certainly not going to be worth paying £26 a day to fish.
