Beautiful day on the river, but hard work. Three fish hooked (one very large), all on nymphs. One fish landed and returned.

Beat:Gwent AS water near to Gilwern
Fishing:Trout (River)

Fished one of the Gwent AS club waters today until the rain came at 5.30 p.m. The river is finally warming up at 14 degrees, but was quite low with only 4" on the Brecon guage, and the stones in the slower reaches now also getting well covered in algae. Little surface action though some fly about in the morning including midge, the odd Yellow May and some gnats, sedge, and Danica mayfly. These were joined by a few Olive Uprights in the afternoon, but I suspect that the trigger to then-rising fish was the presence of numbers of small olives, which have been around for a few weeks now, for which a size 18 Blackhamer seemed to afford the right size and profile, and a similar sized medium olive Ducks Dun. These were still attracting rising and smutting fish until the day was rained off. In the morning, with essentially no rising fish, a HE emerger fished alone, or fished duo with a PBPTN, both took fish, mainly in and about the pacier water nearer to the heads of pools. The biggest fish were of 14" and all fish were in excellent condition. This beat will be open for the Gwent AS Open Skills Day on Saturday 8th June. Tickets still available. https://gwentanglingsociety.co.uk/gwent-angling-society-2019-open-skills-day/

Arrived at midday and fished until 6.00pm - the river condition and setting were wonderful with a good hatch of mayfly but sadly almost no fish rising anywhere on the river.
Managed a small brown on dry but nothing on nymphs - still had a great day.

River below summer levels which made access much easier than previous visits opening up more water than can be covered in a day. Wading was good under foot as far as grip goes - no algae growth yet which turns the bed rock to glass, watch out for the boulders.
Trout ranged in size from 14 to 9 inch with a couple of specimens lost. Majority taken on dry, most productive being a black F fly.

Weather conditions were warm but also cloudy all day such that the slightly cooler evening felt incredibly 'fishy' and very promising despite lowish water. I'm not completely sure of the height but it must have been roughly same as the previous day's 9ins. I cast a shortish line offering a #10 Usk Grub from just above the rock line of lower section Mill stream. After perhaps two casts, a nice fish of around 15lbs with slight colour, performed a splashy head and tail jump adjacent to me, so I moved down a little and re-cast a few times before a serious take from behind the second lie down. I saw the fish (presume the same one) just once during the course of an exciting approx 5 minute contest which involved much head-shaking and a few deep dives rather than long runs. All seemed to be going well when suddenly 'ping', the rod straightened and no fish after all. Fly and points in good shape so it must be me.
