When the weather is hot - head up the valley! Doldowlod always a favourite but another rod got there before us so Craig Lyn for us...
Some surface activity to sedges. medium and blue winged olives throughout the day. The fish came in groups - all on dries as usual but often with added skate...
Best fish a 17" grayling which was fighting fit although it bore a significant cormorant scar - well healed, but a probable culprit was lurking.... Best trout 16" and along with another 14" er beautiful fish - spotted like leopards with huge fins, Wye trout at their best. No sign of a Craig Lyn monster today but we'll be back....

Lovely spot. Fish rising and took one trout on dry fly.

However, extremely upset by instructions to drive down steep incline after turning left after lay-by gate. Gate at bottom padlocked with key lock! No way to turn around so had to back up steep hill with poor road traction. Am concerned that I damaged my car’s transmission or engine in getting out. If someone had said just park in the lay-by and walk, I would have happily done that (which is what I had to do anyway).

Booking Office Note: We apologise for this inconvenience - we've spoken to the fishery owner about this who is unaware of any keyed-padlock. We are looking into this further to ensure our directions are correct and appropriate.

Area:Upper Wye

Beat:Doldowlod

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

The upper beat was visited and fished between 06:30 and 11:30, weather conditions were bright and sunny with a light breeze and the river was slightly low with a tinge of colour following the rain on Tuesday. Four fish up to 14 inches were landed, 1 x grayling and 3 x brown trout. All were taken nymphing through the faster and deeper runs. No fish were seen rising.

This beat is so beautiful and it was such a pleasure to be here that I returned to fish the same upper beat in the evening between 18:00 and 21:00. Weather and river conditions were the same although the evening temperature was slightly warmer. Fish were seen rising in the glides and so I fished a sedge on the surface with a suspended ptn New Zealand style.
The evening resulted in 1 x grayling and 2 x brown trout to 13 inches. Again, a wonderful few hours on this beautiful section of the river.

Thank you again to the Foundation for all you do.
Kind regards to your team.
Steve Rock
