Fishing:Salmon

First time at this beat. River rose about 9 inches throughout the day becoming slightly coloured. Concentrated on Island and Rock Pool. No fish caught and, apart from a big splash towards the bridge, no salmon seen. Enjoyable day none the less, getting used to new Salmon fly rod and line.

Late afternoon/evening on the Honddu. I got to the river to find the water was a good height after recent rain, but horribly coloured - basically chocolate. Only hope was to fish streamers. This worked well, with plenty of fish willing to attack a black leech pattern tied on a jig hook. Bumped and lost a good few. Most of the fish were fairly small (6 to 10 inches) but there were a good handful from 12 to 14 inches.

Was a bit hard going, did hope for the early season Chub bonanza on the balsa. Managed some lovely big chub with some smaller tubes too. The all night rain had not affected the river as it was still very low but did have slight colour in it. Unfortunately the wet weather had made the woods a bit treacherous, I did take a fall late on and jarred my shoulder but no damage. Take care. Mixed weather day too. Enjoyable as always fishing here in lovely surroundings. Be back at the end of the month. All canoes were very polite too.

Welcome overnight rainfall; river level up by about 10cm and a nice bit of colour; some weed and vegetation coming downstream. Five small chub in a hectic three-quarters of an hour spell in the early afternoon; all on hair rigged 8mm pellet. No joy on luncheon meat at all.

Weather very mixed, brilliant sunshine one minute, blowing a gale or tipping down the next.
That having been said, the fishing was good. 4 wbt (largest 1.5lb) - two on gold head nymphs, two on shuttlecock emergers. Missed several positive surface 'takes' and lost a further two fish.
