Quite a day today. I’m not familiar with this part of GLLR but was lucky to meet another member rod when I arrived who kindly showed me around the bottom part of the beat, despite having only a short time to fish himself. Thank You Brian.
Fished down from the gutters, easy wading at 1’ on the gauge, and it was around 1.00 when I had a solid take at, I think, the top of the Chapel. A lively still silvery hen, around 13lb that didn’t look as if it had been in the river too long. Soon after, another hard take and a similar sized fish on for a short time before it went airborne and threw the crushed barb hook. Early evening after backing up a few times, I had another take and a slightly more coloured fish lower down toward the water works, of 13lb maybe 14.
All three fish came to a #10 or #12 Usk Grub. The fish spent a very brief time in the net, swam off strongly and were in very good condition.
A memorable days fishing to close out a hugely frustrating season. Let’s hope for a better, ( and a wetter), 2022

Fishing:Winter Grayling
No. of Anglers:1
River at 0.37 falling slowly on the Byton gauge. Water slightly coloured.
Overcast but the sun broke through after midday.
Grayling all between 8 to 12 inches, trout both 12 inches, the other was a minnow. All on a size 18 ptn fished below a klinkhammer.
Also had a lot (20+) 3 inch grayling. River seemed to be alive with them. These mostly taken on the dry. How do they get their mouths on to a 14 hook is a mystery.

The river was looking good at a steady 0.4m on the Ross gauge, and quite coloured. It was a mostly cloudy afternoon. I was disappointed to lose a barbel first cast, but fish continued to come at intervals during the day. Most caught on pellet at the beginning of the session and meat later on. Biggest barbel estimated at close to 7lbs and chub up to over 4lbs. A good afternoon after a less than successful season so far.

The river was in excellent condition, perfect height, flow and clarity. We saw salmon leaping and both had knocks on a Willie Gun and a Alys Shrimp. We saw salmon throughout the beat.
What a great day.
