I turned into a weather man on Sunday and watching the river drop to 2.17m by bedtime I had some hope. I got up to 2.4m (peaked at 2.62 during Monday) but we’d already decided to travel so off I went. 3 of us fished and we found 3 swims with reasonably smooth water. Visibility was 6 inches max but the weather was perfect and we hoped the journey would be worth while. In the end we were chuffed to all catch in the flood conditions with the five fish (estimated at 4, 5, 5, 5 & 7) split between us. 4 to spicy sausage pellets and one to meat. A great feeling in very difficult conditions

River 3 metres up and rising. The only really fishable spots (steady flow with some depth and a bit of slack on the inside) luckily also suited a few of the barbel. A fun day apart from a few damp feet(!)

Arrived early in order to ready myself for a wet trudge over Heart Attack Hill to be met with a pleasant surprise - a farmer was offering free lifts on the back of his quad bike, along with a 5 litre bottle of local scrumpy and a bacon sandwich!
Only kidding.
Serious question though - why does the directions make you go a far longer, far harder way to the beat AND through some poor blokes garden when there's a legitimate waaay quicker and far less dangerous route?
By the time I'd done the short cut over the hill and settled into a peg with some nice slack water, I was soaked.
Turned into a tough day, with a howling wind and occasional sideways rain. One bite resulted in a kinky* barbel of around 6 pounds.
Love this beat but it may be next season until I brave it again. Unless they put in an escalator.
(* kinky as in damage to the spine)
