Despite high expectations this was quite a tough but still enjoyable day on the middle Usk, which is definitely starting to show signs of an algal bloom. The normally clear late May water had a strong green tinge with visibility around 3 feet. Still, it was certainly fishable and coloured water always makes approaching fish a little easier.
Mayflies, yellow Mays, olive uprights and smaller olives hatched sporadically although every one we saw ended up in the beak of one of the many swallows, sand martins and swifts swooping down over the river.
Rises were few and far between but we tempted 5 to just over 2lbs to mayfly pattern, cdc shuttlecock emerger and klinkhammer. Fish activity picked up a little in the evening although we were off the water by 8.30pm.

River Wye was in a poor condition at 6.30am. Full of algae and sxxt from sewage discharges from further upstream that doesn't get washed downstream in low water conditions. I can provide photos of this .

Bright sunny day, albeit with some cumulus clouds, with some blustery winds although generally not too bad/gusty at times. The river was low, allowing for fishing the lower sections more easily than when the river is higher later in the winter time.
Some lovely trout (nothing too big) taken on dry fly and a few grayling. Missed a couple of takes. All fish safely returned. Used variety of small flies (size 18) - changing regularly to keep fish interested/surprised with new offerings every so often.
