Difficult conditions with a wind that came from any and all directions and was quite gusty at times. Fish were rising all day and taking sub-surface emergers, apparently. Sporadic hatches of sulphur yellows throughout the day; a few mayfly, and a noontide grannom or two.
Lots to look at with dippers, plovers, kingfishers, flycatchers, sand martins and swifts in good numbers
One BT to a size 12 grouse and yellow

The return – on a lovely soft day with occasional showers. We parked at the top this time but walked down to the bottom during the day, braving the bullocks en route. There were sporadic hatches throughout the day to get the fish looking up. Mayflies, yellow may duns, sedges and olives, which were largely what the fish were taking.
34 fish to hand with another dozen lost, all on parachute dry flies, constitutes one of the best days fishing we have had on the Wye and all safely returned. A dozen more came off. The majority were trout – best one 20 inches - but the grayling are getting warmed up too for the start of their season. Bad days are needed to put good ones in context and this was certainly good… with otters and salmon for company, what could be better? Also what looked like spawning activity in the shallows – shad perhaps?
Knotweed location sent on email. Thanks for excellent fishing.

River very low, with a strong swirling wind. Lot of small grayling in the channel at the bottom of the beat, hitting the fly before anything else could get to it. Moved up the beat and didn't see another fish until the fast run below the last deep pool, where there were a few rises. Managed 1 trout of 6 inches on a size 18 klinkhammer.
A lot of evidence of otters in the sand on the banks. Beautiful location, accompanied by Red Kites and the distant sound of machine gun fire from the hills.
