A very beautiful stretch of the River Wye, and I much appreciated this and the careful maintenance of the riverside with new access paths to add to the experience. Fishing was excellent, despite the lowish water.

Very low water conditions. All fish caught on hinders dumbell bait. Canoe traffic looking for deeper water often passing over fish swims. Thoughtless canoe pilots stopping in the few fishing swims on this beat for lunch and swimming caused confrontation.

Beat:Greenbank
Fishing:Trout (River)

Trout of 15, 15 and 16 inches, two on nymph in daytime, one on small sedge late evening (10pm), broken by a bigger one. Also a 4lb chub on a nymph. Fish very finnicky/shy, but those little dimples prove (when one occasionally gets one, even if waiting to 10.15pm) to be substantial fish...

6th/7th July 2022 Carmarthen Amateurs – Weir and Capel Dewi beat.
Many thanks to Allyson in the office for sorting out this booking for us.
It must be 25 years since I fished this beat. We have had some great fishing on the Wye lately so decided that as our luck was in we must be able to catch a sewin or two….. We arrived about 9.30 having driven down from Gloucestershire to be greeted by a very friendly local already on the water who regaled us with fishy tales, and to reinforce them fish were jumping right on cue. The weather looked perfect – warm, 10/10 cloud and a soft SW breeze. I had tied a selection of flies and we started off with a JC Alexandra on floating line and a Silver Stoat on sink tip, being wary of by-laws banning barbed hooks and trebles.
There is a lot of easily fished water on this beat – several hundred yards – with a deep hole above the pumping station and shallower runs down towards the weir with trees on the far bank. Wading is easy and casting comfortable, particularly with the lovely #6 9ft 6in rod my wife gave me as an early birthday present. Were the fish impressed? Hmmmm….
Quite a few knocks and bumps and JB did connect briefly with one above the pumping station that stayed on for about 5 seconds but that was it. We tried change flies such as Dunkeld and Teal Blue and Silver but no joy. At 2.30 the breeze increased significantly and all went quiet so we decided enough was enough and headed home. Discouraged? Nope, we will give it another go for sure.
Its great to have the South West Wales club waters on the passport - makes things so much easier than chasing around for permits. The sat nav seemed unsure as to where Nantgeredig actually is however but the map supplied for beat access was great with just a field of sheep to navigate. It made us realise how spoiled we are with Passport beat directions!
