nice warm autumn day and river slightly up on previous day. salmon not obliging though, although there was some excitement in the afternoon with at least 6 salmon seen jumping just downstream - ranging from a small silver grilse to much bigger but coloured fish. still nothing caught or touched but at least kept the confidence levels up for the rest of the day...

First visit to Doldowlod which is a very nice beat with easy parking and access (lower part didn't fish the upper section). Like the previous day at Craig Lyn, good numbers of upwings and stoneflies about in the Autumn sunshine though again not many fish taking advantage. Once again Euro nymphing proved the way to go with a small pink shrimp on the dropper taking all the fish today. Only fished the lower part of the beat, concentrating on the slower edges of the streamy water. All the Grayling were around the pound mark with the 2 bigger specimens hooked managing to loose the hook during the fight, c'est la vie! Like Craig Lyn, wading should be done careful here as the river flows over bedrock for a large part of the beat and can be very slippery. Very enjoyable weekend fishing the Upper Wye!

Moved downstream from the woods and had a bit better success than the previous day. Started with a snapped hook (First time ever) to a powerful barbel that was on for 20-30 seconds at least then picked up 3 chub and a foul hooked minnow. All the chub fell to spicy luncheon meat and were 3 1/4, 4 and 5lb 1oz- a very long lean fish that fell towards the end of the afternoon. Constantly distracted by a multitude of kingfishers opposite, missed a few good bites as a result.
Not as prolific as usual but enough to keep things interesting and always a beautiful spot to while away a day.

Me and my fishing buddy caught a total of 8 Trout and four Grayling on to top end of this stretch, near the iron road bridge. The river was in nice condition, fairly clear but it was evident that the level had been a lot higher more recently. Bright sun for most of the day. All fish were caught trotting maggots. According to the info and map, you can fish both banks of the river both above and below the road bridge, but I was very disappointed to discover that I could not gain access to the water on the right hand bank (standing on the bridge and facing upstream), because of a fairly substantial wire fence topped by barbed wire.

Ledgered meat did the trick!!
The river was flowing just right but dont take nothing for granted at this time of year, we knew it wasnt going to be easy!!!
Our first day was 2 barbel to 5lb...
And 4 chub to just over the 4lb...
Not a bad start to our 4 day session...

Great to see Mick he is full of good advice and even on a beat that was short of fish found a couple that showed but would not take. He guidance on lines flies and choice of where to fish saves a lot of time. Thank you Mick see you next year.

After days of low pressure it was a difficult day . There was nothing moving or rising.
Caught 2 small Grayling on a red tag nymph near the end of the session.
