All fish were between 20 & 30 cm and all were returned. Hard fishing. Flat calm for long periods but its a beautiful and tranquil place all be it the peace was punctuated by fast jet training and shouts of rock climbers but each of those lasted only seconds and the venue is worth the walk

I drove from London for the day to fish this beat. I think it would be helpful if fishingpassport informed fishermen that they will likely have to deal with many dog walkers who won't hesitate to throw a fetching stick in the water you're fishing. This stretch is not for those seeking an undisturbed day's fly fishing!

The fish were rising at the lower end of the beat, but couldn’t understand what they were taking and tried without success on a variety of dries. There were some hatches during the day which didn’t seem of interest to the Trout. Fished the slightly deeper water half way up the beat with a nymph and had two small fish and two takes.

4 nice rainbows caught and 3 lost. 3 on spinners and 1 on floated worm, but had to stop using worm due to the excessive number of small perch caught.

What was forecast to be a dull and overcast day turned out to be bright and sunny. River could do with some rain - already at summer levels. Good hatch of olives from around 11:30 to 13:00, with the occasional mayfly also coming off. Only rises were from small fry - but I covered them anyway as you can never be sure. No interest in my offerings, so switched to nymphs in the creases of the faster runs. Pricked a couple and watched the occasional fish take a look - but nothing to the net. A frustrating days fishing! Time to start fishing the evenings??

Area:Upper Wye

Beat:Llangoed & Lower Llanstephan

Fishing:Salmon

No. of Anglers:1

It was my first time on this beat, so spent the morning exploring and flicking a spinner into each pool. Very few trout rising and no salmon seen.

After lunch, I focused on the lower half: Chapel Catch and Waterworks. No salmon seen again, but I did see a massive barbel sheltering in a rock gutter. The wading, although over bedrock, was fairly simple (assuming you have good studs on your boots)

The gutters also held a huge population of shad which repeatedly nailed my mepps spinner. To avoid this species any further, I upped to a 7cm Rapala. This worked. Well, my lure no longer bothered the shad, but any passing salmon were similarly untroubled.

Great day out.
