Fishing:Trout (River)
Fished Sat 22nd & Sun 23rd of May.
The river was very low and the weather hot for the time of year. Caught 3 small trout on a small "F"fly Sat, all fish returned. Tried dry, wet, & nymphs on Sun, no good at all. I was supprised at how few Mayflies there were about, although there were a few on Sunday.
Very impressed with the service provided by the Wye & Usk foundation.

1 small brown trout and 1 Grayling of 3/4 lb were caught. Fly: parachute Adams. An enchanting beat, but very few fish seen or rising! Compared to any beats on the Usk, in my view £25.00/day is a bit steep for a trout rod!

This was the first time I had fished this beat. It was a real delight: secluded; beautiful; and enough interesting water to keep me occupied all day. Fine day - what wind there was came later and was mostly downstream. Various flies hatching through the day with quite a few mayfly late afternoon / early evening. Not as many fish showing as I might have hoped in the circumstances, but enough to keep me interested.
17 fish in total. Mostly smallish trout (6-8 inches) with three or four fish around 3/4lb. A few grayling too, the best just over a pound. A really good day all round, helped out by pretty straightforward journeys both ways. This is one of the nearer beats for me and I shall definitely fish it again.

Our incompetence didnt help but we caught a total of two small trout on nymphs, lost two bigger fish, one to nymph, one to dry fly and missed several takes later in the day on dry fly. Both fish returned. A lovely days fishing but possibly a little overpriced at £25.

Fantastic, started on gh p/tail nymphs in morning no surface activity, 6 x grayling to 14ins, good start! Changed to dry in the afternoon, not to nuch activity but Suprisingly the trout did look up for my klink ph/tails all afternoon,1 x 14ins, 6 x 10ins, 3-5 6ins & less & more small grayling. Spoke to an otter twice before deciding he had chased what was left of the fish I had not caught down to Mortimers cross.
In all, one of the most enjoyable days fishing I have had in a very long time, thank you.
All fish blessed & returned

Very attractive beat. Sadly, heavy, overnight rain raised flow level with very coloured water. No hatch observed throughout day. One 5 inch brown trout was the total for the day, caught at around 4pm when the water colour was starting to improve. Taken on a small, black, gold-headed, ribbed nymph. We will be back.
Booking service excellent. Advice from Seth much appreciated.

Day started off not to well (forgot my kelly kettle) but lovely beat. Plenty of fly activity but nothing rising. Managed to catch six trout to 8ins on spiders and goldheads before falling in. Still great day and will be back.

Reasonable conditions although a tricky wind at times. Sparse fly life and no rising fish. caught two Brown Trout of about 9ins and lost two others, one a much better fish, all on weighted nymphs in the faster, deeper runs.

Minus 0.5 C on the car temperature guage as we drove past Lucton School at 07:00 hrs. A postively balmy + 2.5 C when we parked at Sned Wood 10 minutes later but, Jeez, it was cold in the river (especially when venturing past the Plimsoll Line).
The cold - together with the bright sun and the clear river - may go someway to explaining the relative paucity of fish. I finished up with 4 Grayling - including a very nice fish of around 1.5lbs - and 3 Trout. All on nymphs. Sporadic dry hatch in the afternoon - but I only saw one fish rise all day. Tom (who suffered a holed wader)will file his own report!
