Water very cold, chilly breeze. River conditions exellent for salmon, but sadly no sign of them. Later tried for trout at lower end of beat. Hooked and lost a pound class fish, then landed another slightly bigger on an elk hair sedge size 16. Fish returned. This beat would probably fish wonderfully for trout with 18 ins. less water.

No Salmon caught or seen, however two trout caught on a cascade. One at a pound and one a pound and a half. Beautiful strech of the river. Will be back and next time hopefully wont snap my salmon rod in two after only two hours....

First time on this new WUF beat. Simple to find, easy access and safe parking. Grey, cold day with a chilly North West wind and plenty of water barreling down the Usk. Quite a varied beat with fast deep gullies and some very deep pools below the island. With nothing rising and precious little fly around nymphed unsuccessfully for two hours. Given the depth and flow of the river found it difficult to get my bugs down deep enough.
Over lunch on the bank had a think about tactics and with a few LDO's and Yellow Mayfly beginning to show in the tail of the pool above the island changed to a French Partridge and was rewarded with 5 pristine wbt. All in the 12"-14" class, wild as the Usk and fin perfect. Each take was very, very aggressive accompanied by all sorts of aerial acrobatics. All returned safely. The action stopped just as quickly as it had started, the fishing window being between 2pm and 4pm.
Really enjoyed this beat, lots of variety and am looking forward to fishing it again with perhaps a little less water and warmer climes to get more out of it.

Fished Glan-y-Cafn today, plenty of trout about, brother had a dozen or so, mainly on goldhead grhe's fished on a Tenkara rod (1st time out). Didn't see (or contact) any salmon. Couldn't make most of the beat as the water was too high to wade (above chesties) and the tree canopy making casting even a 13 ft rod difficult.
Will be back when about 10" on the Glan Usk gauge.

4 browns (6-12") caught on nymph. 1 other lost(possibly the biggest of the day) on balloon caddis. Cold & windy conditions, with sporadic hatches of grannom & LDO between the rain squalls. Very few fish seen rising. Only fished the right bank, top half of the beat (between 11.30-18.30). No signage demarcating the beat limits, and not that clear from the map either.

Fortunate to have three hours of lovely weather between 11am and 2pm. No surface activity but caught over 10 trout on ptn - largest circa 2lb. Weather deteriorated after that and the fishing with it. Hatch of grannom on upper pool about 3.30 pm. Fish not switched on to them. Left at 4pm - satisfied. Enjoyed my day - nice spot, good access and varied water. Map of beat does not show large island and it is not clear where top and bottom of beat actually is. Also no clear pathways at top and bottom. I found this unsatisfactory. Otherwise, most enjoyable.

Rain all morning then brightened up, but still chill light wind. Lovely early evening sun was welcome. Rising fish very picky with several clear takes missed but took a very strong 15" brown trout at the down stream end of the beat in the slower water, late on at 5pm on an Adams 14. Good new beat with plenty of variety. Thank you.
