I've fished Hergest a few times in the past so decided to try Aberedw for a change and was not disappointed. Lots of fish rising from the off to various flies which just seemed to get more and more as the day went on. Water level was a good height so stuck with the dry fly all the way to the top (which is easily a whole days fishing) and landed a few and lost a few. A great day. The Edw really is a cracking place.

Very difficult due to overhanging trees.

Fished this beat a few days earlier. What a difference today. Water clear and a perfect height, steady mixed hatch all day and fish popping up in every pool and likely lie.
Landed 22 x wbt, 4 around 10", the rest 5"-8". Experimented with lots of different dries, everything in the olive, cdc and Adams category on a size 16 hook worked.
This is as good small stream fishing gets anywhere in the world. And on your doorstep for a tenner! Magical day, thank you WUF!

Arrived at a chilly Edw beat, very coloured and relatively high due to a couple of days of heavy rain.
Many of the fish holding lies unfishable due to conditions. Not much hatching or rising but did manage 8 wbt - 5" - 9" using flies chosen for their visibility more than anything else.
Given the intimidating height of both the Usk and Wye from recent rain this was a relatively productive option.

Great day on the Edw. Good LDO hatch most of the session which seemed to have switched the fish on. 14 wbt to 10" (most 5"-7"). All on an Adams or CDC Emerger. Lost as many due to barbless hooks and fish taking to the skies rather than diving deep in the absence of normal water levels.
Surprisingly open beat given the angler is under canopy for the most part. Just fished the lower section for 4 hours. Combined with the top section this beat offers a full day's fishing, sensible parking, easy wading and plenty of wbt. And all for a tenner!

Another grand day on the Edw - quite cool but many sunny periods, and enough flies hatching to make the trout look up. Eventually landed 16, between 5" and 10", on either paras or dries (adams, dark olives etc.). I think I could have tempted some of the larger trout on nymphs, but was enjoying the top of the water sport. Lots of active birds as well, including 2 Kingfishers flashing past for a few minutes.

Full cloud cover that reached down and touched the ground with some typical Welsh drizzle-in fact it rained hard for some of the time. Temperature ranged from 15 to 18. Water was thin and very clear; only in deep pools of upper beat did the bottom vanish. Large Browns (like March ones, except it is September), tiny grey dusters and very few brown/purple mayfly (?) were hatching. Fish ignoring the lot - perhaps 1 rise all day. Took fish on a gold bead GRHE and nothing else would do. WBT to 5" and salmon parr. Onto the upper beat: I missed the beat stop sign and found myself in a gorge with a couple of pools stuffed with fish - Having lost my 5th GRHE I had the chance to experiment - nothing else (honest). In higher water that section would be dangerous to wade... I went swimming twice.
Despite the rain and the spooky fish, I had a fantastic day (11.00-6:30) and didn't get to fish Hergest as planned. Great day out - if a little bruised!

Staying in Kington I looked at the Arrow and decided I needed to venture further afield. The Edw is usually a great beat but I arrived to find it suffering from a similar lack of water. Two small browns of about 5" saved my morning. One to a PTN the other to a Klinkhammer.

Most fish caught on PTN a few on the Adams both size 16. Slowed in the afternoon when sun came out. Beautiful quiet beat.
