first time fishing on the ithon, very nice stretch of of water and easy wading throughout. conditions not too good to start off with (high and dirty water)but soon dropped down 6" and cleared out a bit. fish difficult to find but i was very pleased to end the day with a very fat 17" grayling .

A warm and gentle day with sun from time to time, one would have thought there would be plenty of surface activity but it was the opposite. I saw only 3 rising fish and caught them all, 3 trout 8-10 “ on size 16 and 18 dries, 3 Grayling 8, 10 and a massive 16 1/2 inches, the first to a dry and the others to a copperhead PTN. Felt like late summer not early autumn!

Thought I would try the Ithon as the Wye was still high, but it was also high, fast & coloured - lucky to hook 1 good grayling on a nymph from a slower glide under an overhanging tree, c. 22" & est. 2lb + - good fish for this stretch. Put up a strong fight on a 15' Tenkara rod with lots of aerial action, but successfully landed & returned.

Fish were rising at the beginning of the day and taking very small insects mostly at the tails of the pools. Everything went quiet from midday until 2.00pm and then it was all go until 5.00pm. Ten days ago I was wondering where the trout were after only catching grayling on the Irfon but today was the opposite.
Trout were mostly small but plentiful. I lost more than I caught and the biggest at 12" came to a size 12 silver sedge the rest were caught on a selection of size 18 dries. The 9" grayling had a size 18 para Adams in fairly fast water. There were 5 goosanders on the water.

Nice looking river, slightly coloured. We caught 3 tiny trout 5 inch each. Still hoping for warmer weather and a good hatch...

Arrived to find the river very coloured with a strong and gusty wind. Fished duo with a variety of nymphs to no avail. 5pm arrived and I decided to call it a day but gave it another hour because I saw a rising fish below the bank, chucked a size 18 Greenwells at it ..rejected...chucked a size 18 para Adams ..rejected..then a Griffiths Gnat and a Iron Blue ,still no joy. Finally went to an 16 Adams and bingo! Proved to me that a rejection doesn't necessarily mean spooked fish. Another followed 10ft upstream. 2 Trout , 8 and 10 inches.

Method used was dryfly and Nymph.
River on the bones! Very very low. There were stretches where virtually the whole of the riverbed was dry. Never seen it like this before and I have fished this river since '72.
