1 trout caught on mayfly, about 12ozs. River looked very healthy, good flow. Fishing was hard though, with no other takes, either on dry or nymph.

Very clear water on what was a lovely bright sunny and hot day that meant fishing was hard work. After a midday snooze and a visit to a pub for a cooling beer, waited for late afternoon / evening for a superb mayfly hatch which made up for the slower day. Only wish I had had more mayfly patterns to keep me going. Looks like the Chainbridge pub is undergoing a major refurbishment which could mean a rather busy environment with a pub / caravan park one end and another caravan park the other end.

The sun was shining so we headed west for an evening's fun hoping for a mayfly hatch. And what a hatch! I have not seen so many spinners dancing since the 70s. The trout must have been sated on them as they didnt seem too bothered although Usk trout are usually more circumspect than their tarty Wye cousins. Those fish that were fooled had been practicing too - of 12 fish hooked 10 came off, leaving us with two lovely fat 13 inch fish, both returned. Bigger ones were lost and much bigger ones were just far too wise to be hooked. As dusk fell - we fished till 10 - the bats seemed to appreciate the ephemeropteran extravaganza rather more than the fish. No silver tourists sighted although we did give the salmon rod a trundle.

Found the fishing here very difficult for trout. Very deep water, access from bank very steep, wasnt a gravel bed as indicated in book, mainly rock. But on the bright side it was a lovely location.

Again worked the top run through to Chine for salmon without success. Sea trout is still showing occasionally at the rock. Attempted to catch it using small sewin flies and 3lb line with no success,
No rises until around 8.30 and caught 6 to 1.25 lb at the tail of Chine Pool on Yellow May Dun 14 and later White Wulff 12. Fished until 9.45 then all went quiet.
Water .6 and clear.

Arrived at 8am, river 0.8m on the gauge, carrying a bit too much colour but still fishable. Two fish in the 18-20lbs class showed just above Rock whilst I was tackling up. Had a lovely day with the 15 footer and saw another 6 fish show whilst running. Most were silver torpedos around the 10lb mark and one red fish around 7-8lbs. Was never close enough to drop fly straight on their noses. No rise to mention, but a half pound brownie (equalling my record fish for this season!) hurled itself at my Conehead Cascade and was safely returned. When I left the river had cleared a little and dropped 3 inches. Prospects for friday and saturday look excellent.

Might be worth mentioning on the WUF website the proximity of the caravan park.

River 0.7m on gauge slight tint (tidy). Weather awful. squally veering winds made it hard work with the 15 footer. No sign of salmon. A huge variety of uprights hatched between 11 and 2. Dark olives, light olives, may duns and even a couple of mayfy and false march browns . A very localised rise ensued (usual suspects on the flats just above woodstream) Quite difficult to cast to in a gusty downstream wind and just a couple of missed takes.
