Not a good day, very little happening. This beat needs some serious work, barely half of it is fishable, I won’t be gong back in a hurry.

It’s such a wonderful beat , such a shame that the majority of the beat is not accessible. Both fish taken on dries

A most enjoyable day exploring a new river for me. The water was low but still very good stretches available. Not many fish seen and very few hatches observed. Was a cold day compared to the recent weather. 1 trout on dry sedge and a few others raised but not connected. Will be back

The poor Lugg at its bare bones and for such a beautiful beat showing the ravages of winter and another victim of predation to almost destruction. One rise seen all fish blind to tungsten nymphs on french leader it’s duo.
Wild fish may become Dodos the way things are going.

7 Trout, 2 Grayling

Another very warm day so I turned up mid afternoon preparing to fish through the afternoon into the evening. When I got to the river I wasn’t expecting to find two groups of young people sunbathing and a young family jumping up and down on the bridge whilst their dog was swimming in the river below them. It sounds horrendous doesn’t it, but it wasn’t. The youngsters sunbathing were really respectful and the family on the bridge were passing through and the father was making his children laugh. As for the fishing it was tough, although I did have tugs on my nymphs and splashes at the dry fly. I was rewarded later on with a 12”-14” brown trout caught on a cdc dun tied by myself, copied from Davie McPhail on YouTube. All together a good day.

Another very hot day. River could really do with some rain. No real rise on to speak of so went with a red-necked nymph. All trout from riffle sections and decent size, including one from an adventure into the wooded bit at the top of the beat, tough going up here.

Really nice day out, something of a safari too. Saw no less than two very big eels (first time seen ever!), a possible small 3rd or even a lamprey (unsure as it buried under a rock), what looked like a nice loach, and a few kingfishers. Also-saw a massive dead fish so went and retrieved with a net to investigate-is this just a massive brown trout or even a sea trout that has lost its silver? (Photo attached-am a size 11 foot for scale) NB fish was returned to where it was found. Also slightly worrying saw a large grayling floating downstream upside down, so flipped it over gently and sent it on it’s way. It’s gills were pumping as it floated so maybe overheating/not enough oxygen?

3 Trout, 1 Grayling

First time using the passport scheme. Overall very impressed. Managed to catch a stunning brown trout of around 12’’ and 3 average-size grayling; all taken on nymph.
Good hatch in the evening, not many fish rising however. Lost a good fish on a dry fly at the larger pool in the middle of the stretch.
River looked to be in good condition, just a bit too low for ideal fishing. Will return once river levels start to rise again.
The beat also had quite a few groups of people hanging around by the river, with one group journeying down through the stretch I was fishing in a rubber dinghy. Probably not the best idea to turn up on a Saturday when there’s good weather.
Also saw quite a few kingfishers, one stopping just a few metres away from me in a tree.

WUF note : the Lugg has a public right of navigation though it is rare to find

1 Trout, 3 Grayling

There were 2 of us, bright sunny day, got to the water about 8am. Walked the lower part of the beat and about half way down found a lamb stuck in the river not able to climb out. Lamb was removed from river and we carried on down. Started fishing in the pool at the very bottom of the beat and had three grayling between us fairly quickly on French leader. Next fish came from the bridge pool and was the only one of the day on a dry fly. Fish came fairly regularly throughout the day. Plenty of upwing flies about but not that many rising fish. Best of the day was a 15" brown from an unlikely spot just upstream of the middle weir. Lovely beat but access to water not that easy in most places due to the barbed wire fence.
Saw a goosander a couple of pools up from the bridge just before leaving in the evening.
