Last visit for me during the trout season started well with an early brown trout caught on old faithful, a copper john. Went quiet for a while, before landing a grayling on a cdc down in the ferry pool. An hour of comedy followed with tangle after tangle and a moment of madness where I got both flies caught in my waistcoat, prompting me to consider throwing everything into the heirag.
A cup of tea, a sandwich and a stern word with myself brought me back from the brink with a team of traditional wets and a further six fish. Mostly small, although one of the grayling and a second trout were worthy of respectability and placement in the middle weight division.
Weather was pleasant with intermittent sunshine. I shall return when the leaves fall and fish for grayling.

The catch return is a conservative estimate. From the first cast in the Ferry it was obvious that the stretch was stuffed with hungry trout and grayling that were eager to snaffle any fly that was cast over them.I fished the same #14 GRHE and #16 Iron Blue wet pattern all day. I didn’t see a definite iron blue hatch but the trout were keen to take it.
The grayling were mostly small juvenile fish but there were three around 10”-12”. The trout talley, although many were parr, included a decent number of 8”-12” fish in lovely condition, two of the larger ones taking point and dropper simultaneously, which on a 7ft 3wt ,was interesting. Best fish was a 14” beauty, hooked in the Heron’s run which gave a good account of itself on the light tackle. I gave up counting the tiddlers nearing the bridge and fished the streamier water below the bridge in the afternoon down to Dolmeudwy, where in 2 1/2 hours, fishing the same team, I caught absolutely zilch. Funny old game as they say.

Water level quite low but otherwise conditions were perfect. Lots of surface activity. Most fish taken to emergers. Two of grayling 12"+ and ditto one of the trout. Otherwsie most fish in the 6-8" bracket. A very nice day of fishing in a very nice location.

For 2 of us beginners this was our first encounter with genuinely wild fish. Many thanks to Lyn Davies for excellent and patient guiding!
