Gusty wind in the face put the fly rod back in the van by 10am; great shame as the water was just do-able at 0.92mtr at Ross gauge.
Spinning produced a very fat o.o.s. Pike of 15lb+ and then a huge run for a full 6 seconds and a big silver swirl 80 yds downstream. Three minutes later, and back to where it was hooked (top of beat), it just turned again and slipped the barbless hook on the Red and Gold FC. Upside, it was far from tired. Down-side, it would have been nice to catch a glimpse of the wee beastie. But it was a fish!
Next time.....

Great to be back on this mixed water beat. Fished through the usual spots with the fly and tried the spinner on the upper section with no joy. Two heavy trout put a slight bend in the two-hander and a good sized silver fish top and tailed below the croy. One real positive note; the winter floods have washed away all the snags and rubbish on the bottom section, under the power lines, so its possible to wade down the middle gravel ridge from the island and get out onto the left bank without having to plough 100 metres back up river!

Difficult conditions with biting upstream wind and bright sunny skies. Satisfied overall with 5 barbel to the two of us but having selfishly jumped into the banker swim my fishing companion must be disappointed with his return.

The River was running high and as red as a fox! Having expressed our concerns the day before on the river conditions we were advised by the office we could go ahead with the day's fishing. Given there was no other day available before the end of the season we desided to go ahead. We fished luncheon meat on the lead and late in the afternoon a 5 LB chub was caught. This is the first time we have fished the Wye and Usk water and came away feeling the price tag was too high!
We spent a lot of the day trying to find suitable swims to fish as these were few due to the conditions. We hope to re visit the water next season and try our luck when conditions would be more favourable. Tight lines everyone.

Opening day and the river high and rising. More than ever in hope rather than expectation we plugged away. Tried the fly and the fc without any joy. Great to be back out fishing and here's to a successful season on the Wye. Tight lines to all.

Only the one bite all day, just as it was getting dark. Unfortunately came off :(
Oh well, that's fishing! At least it was a nice day. Good stretch though, have caught every other visit, particularly good at the top end by the woods.

Clear, bright sunny day. A beautiful stretch of river, but unfortunately spoilt by the noisy smelly abstraction pump that runs all day close to the most productive looking swims. I use Wye and Usk regularly, but this was a disappointing day due to lack of fish and the noisy environment.

The river came up 1.5 feet overnight after some rain upstream. It gave the (low) river a bit more colour. Together with heavy clouds, some drizzling rain and a strong wind, conditions were ideal. All bites came in approximately 1 golden hour between 17:30pm and 18:30pm.
