Perhaps not the best day for my first time on the Monnow - an amber Met Office warning for high winds coupled with horizontal rain made it a challenge. Alas nothing caught but at least a chance to get to know this stretch of the river. Despite the conditions steady numbers of yellow mays, olives and mayfly - but few rises. Certainly a beat to come back to when the weather is more clement.

There was two of us fishing myself and friend from demark, my first river trip and his first time in Great Britain fishing. He took five half pound browns using a dry fly, I took seven using dry flies, largest brown being about 1.5 lb. The beat was fantastic and we were joined for lunch by two local dogs. The booking through the office was so easy I could not believe it. The ladies were so helpful and they did what it said on the tin, I will definitely be back.

Only one of us could make trip in the end.
Conditions difficult with cold downstream wind and river coloured. No rise to speak of, just the occasional fish on surface. However, 3 fish to a olive klinkhammer - 8 inches, 10 inches and finally a magnificent 18 inch beast. All fish returned safely. Thank you for the great day.

Only had 2 hours around midday, so only fished middle half. River very low, but regular rises when the wind died. 1xWBT approx 1 lb on gold beaded PTN. Managed to shake off another that took a parachute adams. Lovely beat - look forward to tackling it when it has more water.

A hot bright day coupled with a low and clear river made for challenging fishing. The low water level did, however, allow me to fish parts of the river which would normally be out of reach. Two wild brown trout caught, the largest 3/4 lb, and three others lost. There were sporadic hatches of Large Brook Duns and what looked like early Yellow Mays, plus lots of Hawthorns in the surrounding fields. Fished New Zealand style with a small olive Klinkhamer and baetis nymph suspended below, catching fish on both (including one comedy moment with two fish on at once). Stayed overnight at the Bell - highly recommended! This beat is booked up on an almost daily basis so was surprised to see so few catch reports. Hope more people start submitting their returns.
WUF NOTE: Although the beat may appear booked on a daily basis, day tickets through the Foundation are on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays only. The remaining days are reserved by the owner.

4 trout caught - best 1 lb. Hot very sunny and very few olives hatching or any other upwings. The fish that were rising were smutting so a bit 'challenging' but great fun and enjoyable day had. Fish caught mainly on size 22 black gnat.
