Perfect river and weather conditions meant the barbel were feeding well today. Fishing at the lower end of the beat I sat it out in one productive swim all day. Bites came steadily throughout the day on a variety of shapes, sizes and types of pellet combined with a 5oz feeder to hold bottom in the strong flow. The final tally was 10 barbel to 8lb 14oz. A good start to my 4 day end of season trip.

Started the fishing in a frosty morning, temperature was -4. Tried to catch pike with lures, the conditions weren't so ideal for that. Sunny day and crystal clear water, not the best. Fished from 8.30 am till 4.30 pm, tried many kind of lures but couldn't get a bite. The only action happened in the morning, a massive pike followed my lure twice, but unfortunately didn't attack it. Independently from the fishless day, I had a really great time on this stunning part of the Wye!

Very peaceful beat. Targeted pike initially with lures, nothing happening! The river was coming through at quite a pace but still lots of good looking and accessible areas for the pike. Couple of big salmon spotted on the move and counted 60+ swans on the water at one time although they didn't cause any probs. Decided at 3pm to have an hour or so going for barbel or chub. First cast produced a screaming run, slide down the bank(not the first of the day) which resulted in a snapped rod and a lost fish. This was gonna be one of those days I thought!
With the last piece of luncheon meat I free lined it down the edge and straight away a bite and an immaculate chub of 3 lb saved the day....will be back
