First time to Buckland and enjoyed myself enormously. The high bank makes easy river access limited to a couple of areas, however I could see where, with a little more persistence you could explore much more of the river from them. I fished in two stints: 10am to 2pm and 7pm to 10pm. A small fish from the bobbly water above Beech pool on an Olive emerger in the first session. There was a hatch and rises in progress at 10am. Mainly olives with the odd mayfly. It petered out at about 11.30. The evening session seemed similar at first, a light hatch and intermittent rises. By 8.30 pm though, the wind had dropped right down and there were many more flies and big gloopy rises rang out in the dusk. Finally I covered a riser with a small pale watery that I assumed was a half pounder. It took and I soon realised it was much bigger. It did all the things you dream of in the closed season. Leapt, made my reel spin, tried to get into roots and more. I’m not great at estimating weight, but I estimate it at 2.5 pounds but I’ll remember it as three! A similar sized fish broke me 10 minutes later. I won’t be fishing here again on less than 5lb tippet… A great evening fishing and a PB wild trout after decades of fishing. Can’t ask for more than that!!

Could someone please indicate on or please explain in the Beat notes how you access the bottom of the fishing beyond beech Pool as access proved to be impossible.
Thanks

A super day on this beat - one of our best on the Usk in 15 years!
On a grey, slightly wet day, fish were rising freely. All fish on dry parachute Adams. Best a lovely 20 incher.
Delighted that Buckland is on the passport and we will be back next year.

I've caught one trout catch and release ,on a dry fly , may fly imitation in brown colour , the river was at a low level and the water extremely clear ,it was almost impossible to get close without to spook them . I have seen plenty of fish, it was a very nice fishing day

For someone who did not catch any fish, it might seem strange for me to say that it was an excellent day. Conditions were perfect and there were many fly hatches and related rises during the day. Best time was between 11 and 4. The problem was merely the competence of the angler. I had 7 fish of varying sizes on but was too slow to react. The fish were rising to a mid brown fly which I attempted to replicate. As I was the only person on the beat , there was plenty of good fishing and I will return to conquer it.
