Tried fishing the fly at the top of the beat. Blustery wind and deep wading made this rather difficult; a spinning rod would probably make fishing the pools there a bit easier. However I had one strong pull in the Corner Pool, I'm pretty sure from a salmon, and a large trout from the Hut Pool, both on a black and yellow tube. I switched to a trout rod and had 3 small trout from the streamy runs on my way back to the bottom of the beat. All fish returned. Thanks to WUF.

A lovely morning on Glan-yr-Afon. Bright sunshine, warm, fairly still. Not much activity at lower end of beat, so tried nymphs etc before switching to a dark olive (I should have paid more attention to past catch returns posted here) when I saw a few fish rising towards upper end of beat below waterfall. Had plenty of interest, but possibly needed a smaller size as couldn't connect. Eventually had a fine WBT of c. 14oz (returned). By around 2pm few fish rising.

Minimal hatch. Nil caught. Not helped by lots of walkers & 8 ambulance personel in high vis clothing floundering about in the water practising rescue techniques!

5 WBT to the net between 2 rods. Three fish were around the 1 - 1.5lb mark. All taken on #18 olive sparkle dun targeted at rising fish. In the warm weather, the hatches were well under-way when we arrived at 10.30am. 4 of the fish were in the net before 11.30am! Plenty of olives and March Browns hatching off. Fish were still risking at dusk although they appeared to switch to midge and were far more difficult to tempt, even with the smallest of flies. A few sedge were hatching at the end of the day also. A very pleasant day to be on the river.

Got there just before noon, to some rising fish near the road bridge. Hooked one 10" WBT on klinkhammer, missed another. Missed what seemed a decent fish on a weighted nymph in same location. Moving further up the beat, no real sign of fish activity. Perhaps too early in season? Lovely stretch of water, although perhaps mostly bit too deep and fast running for serious trout action?

A great day's fishing. Large Dark Olives about from about 11am until 3pm and caught four trout (1/2lb to 1 1/4lb) on a sparkle Dun. The best part for me though was a flush hatch of March Brown that lasted about 15 minutes only (starting at 12.30)which is something I've hoped to see but always missed on my annual early season trips to the Usk over the past 10 or so years. Even though I'm sure the trout were taking dark olives then as well I felt compelled to switched to a march brown to catch my 5th trout. It's a great beat. All trout were returned

A successful first outing of the 2012 season yesterday with 3 trout caught and 1 lost, all of about 1lb and in lovely condition. Taken on CDC emergers and duns during a decent LDO hatch, but which was localised to the faster water about 70 yards upstream of the bridge. Flies started to appear at around 12.30pm with the hatch at its most intense at around 1.30pm. It was all over by 2.15pm.
