Very early start, bright warm conditions with a slight breeze. Only two fish to the duo all on the nymph, one at 8" and very pleased to land one at 2lb 6oz my biggest fish of the season and on the last trip as well.

This was the last day for me fishing the Usk this year so I decided to try any methods I have thought about using all season but not actually tried. The river was carrying a good amount of water but was still fairly clear so a streamer fished upstream was tried in the faster water and deeper pools which was hard work and only produced one fish but not the monster I was hoping for. Around midday pale watery upwings started coming off and a few more fish to 15" fell to a size 17 Para Adams, a change to a French leader with a peeping caddis and black magic nymph produced the highlight of the day when I hooked into a lump of a Trout in the pocket water above the bridge. The fish powered a good 3 meters with just its tail in the water before taking me on a stumbling dance around the rocks. I tried to keep it upstream of me but eventually it got down stream and spat the hook. Roll on next season and round two with that fish, a great memory to take into winter.

Beautiful stretch of water at just the right height and colour for salmon fishing. None seen or caught, though two trout did like the small cascade I was using. Both returned. Bankside rough but passable with care. Water worth fishing again, possibly more for trout than salmon. Enjoyable, if frustrating, day. Thanks.

River high, quite coloured. Strong flow and missing studs kept me out of a lot of this water. Most fish fell to the fine and fluffy Black Magic nymph (Jonathan Barnes)with a couple on the Pale Watery dry (JB again). I was fishing in the faster water and also lost a couple of really strong fish (2 - 3lbs). Will be back with better strategy. Great, colourful and fit fish, got harder in the afternoon.

Early start, not easy to reach the river due to a fallen tree blocking the path, bright conditions, fished the duo, 8 trout 8-10" all on the Polyphaetis nymph.

Fantastic day on an incredibly picturesque beat.
Wading was tricky and I was very thankful of my wading staff. The only rises were on the far side of the river, and presenting a fly drag free to the far side was problematic as it required a long cast over much faster water. Plenty of fly life but the fish seemed to be taking flies just under the surface. I did have two takes off a small olive klink, one struck too early and one on for 2 seconds but came free. Rises stopped in the afternoon and I didn't have any luck with nymphs.
An almighty splash came behind me whilst fishing the flats, far too loud for a trout. I also saw a small bar of silver jump ahead of me later on in the day.
Despite the blank a great day in a lovely spot.

Odd fish were rising sporadically through the day. I managed to miss about 8 of them, and caught just one. I felt they wanted small emergers but fishing them was difficult because persistent rain disturbing the surface made sighting the fly hard - my excuse anyway.

Great day, we arrived near to mid day and straight away could see fish rising to the dry. Worked slowly up the river and took 5 fish before wrapping up at about 17:00. 4 were small, 1 a little over 1 1/4lbs. There was one that got way, always is - goes without saying it was huge. As ever, small dark olive CDC emerger flies worked well.

Saw plenty of trout taking from the surface but didn't get a sniff of a salmon. A great day out all the same.
