1'6", overcast and drizzly. 12lb coloured fish from Top Planks. A lively fight as the fish decided to leave the pool and was landed at the telegraph pole some way down the white water (two partial dunkings for me on the way down!). Sink tip and #6 Ghillie.

Fished the beat with salmon rod a all morning to no avail; fished a trout rod after a sandwich on the river bank with the dogs, using NZ style dry fly on a dropper and size 14 beaded nymph 4 ft down on the point. All fish fought like demons & were in mint condition, with biggest trout (approx.pound & a half) taking the dry (mayfly pattern-size 10). Returned to the salmon rod after tea (the terrier found a rat)... And lost two salmon in succession on a sunray shadow pattern tube stripped through the water. The terrier got quite excited each time on the shoreline, thinking my torrent of expletives was an indication of more rats in the 'offing. Fished on until 8pm but no more fish. They are in there!

This ended up being a rather short session as having fished a couple of the Wild Stream beats earlier in the day I was feeling it by the time I got to Ty-Newydd. I love this place though and used it as a base. Taking breakfast here as the sun came up, coming back for lunch between fishing, and eating dinner as the sun went down.
2 trout caught and put back including my largest fish of the day a slim fish of 31cm.

It had rained hard the night before and the river had risen a foot and was coffee coloured. If I was not a 150 miles from home I would not have fished. The one fish caught was taken on a heavy nymph as the water was flowing very quickly.
Accommodation at the Old Vicarage B&B in Erwood was very convenient, with friendly lady owner and good value for £30.

The river had risen as a result of persistent overnight rain. I and my 10 year old son - on his first fly fishing expedition - saw plenty of movement on this beat, including a leaping salmon of I would guess 10 - 12lb, in the Bathing Pool. We also saw several trout rising to what appeared to be pale yellow emerging flies. Despite the idyllic scene and near perfect conditions (a gentle breeze, water slightly up, cloud cover) we did not connect with any fish. However, I think it's safe to say my son is now hooked on wild river fishing, and much more aware now of the river's rich and delicate eco system. Magical!

Another good day of fishing, strong wind crossed with sun made for little surface activity. Water very low, clear despite being full and coloured the day before.
Lots of brownies, 4-5'' and some grayling, mostly on wet fly in fast corridors. Tried nymphing without much of luck, dry - the same...Biggest fish of the day grayling 12", brown trout 10".
NB. There is a new gate installed at second field, you need to go over as owner forgot to make it openable.
